A new report claims that the iPhone 6 is likely going to be thinner than Apple’s previous iPhone models thanks to improvements in the LED backlighting technology that the company uses inside of its iconic device.
With Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors flying and a launch date coming up in just a few weeks, it’s not surprising to see iPhone 6 rumors starting to swirl around, teasing prospective Galaxy S and iPhone buyers. iPhone information typically starts to flow when an Apple competitor gets close to a major launch.
The iPhone 6 itself is likely still months away from release but that hasn’t stopped rumors from trying to piece together Apple’s next product. A report earlier today suggested that the iPhone 6 will come in two new sizes, utilize a durable Sapphire display and arrive in September like the iPhone 5s.
A new report, issued by LEDInside of TrendForce, claims that information gleaned from supply chain sources points to an iPhone 6 that will be thinner than Apple’s previous iPhone models thanks to a shift from 0.6 mm thick LED backlights to backlights that are just 0.4 mm thick. The report claims that Apple will do the same with its next iPad model, rumored to have a display around 12-inches in size.
It’s not clear how much of a difference the new technology will make. Apple’s iPhone 5s measures 7.6mm thin and is one of the thinnest smartphones on the market.
The report also claims that the device will feature a 4.7-inch display, a size that has appeared in a number of recent reports concerning the iPhone 6, and it also curiously states that the iPhone 6 release date will emerge in June rather than in the fall.
While a June release date is possible, it’s unlikely that these sources know the exact iPhone 6 release date. Instead, the timing is likely based on production deadlines that Apple has mandated to component manufacturers.

Well-known leakster Sonny Dickson has also begun teasing what appear to be components for an unreleased iPhone. The teasers depict a shell of a smartphone that Dickson alludes to possibly being the shell of the iPhone 6. Dickson was the man responsible for leaking the shells of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display that were widely circulated ahead of their respective launches.
The photos don’t depict too much detail though the back appears to be in line with Apple’s iPad mini and iPad Air designs. It also appears to be wider than the current iPhone. We also see a cutout for the camera module and the flash. Apple is rumored to be included an upgraded camera inside the iPhone 6.
Dickson did not supply any dimensions for the alleged iPhone 6 parts so it’s impossible to say how they stack up with the likes of the iPhone 5s. Though now that he has his hands on this supposed part, we should see more leaks in the future.
9to5Mac has added some photos of its own to the pile, photos that feature a frame sporting Apple’s iconic logo. The photos depict a device that is clearly much larger than the iPhone 5s though it’s possible that what we’re looking at is a prototype that Apple is throwing around as a final version of the iPhone 6.
The Wall Street Journal believes the company will deliver a 4.5-inch and a 5+-inch iPhone 6. NPD DisplaySearch believes that two iPhone 6 models with higher resolution displays will be coming in 2014. A KDB Daewoo Securities report uncovered by OLED-Display includes two iPhone 6 display sizes. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who accurately predicted many iPhone 5s features, thinks Apple is planning an iPhone 6 with a screen between 4.5-inches and 5-inches.
With display sizes currently all over the place, it could be that Apple is still toying with several potential iPhone 6 prospects.
These leaks come months before the iPhone 6 is expected to touch down and with rumors pointing to several different screen sizes, it’s not clear if Apple has decided on the final version of its next smartphone. So while Dickson is a credible source, consumers would be wise to keep an open mind.
