iPhone 6 Leak Offers Realistic Take on Rumors

Another day, another alleged iPhone 6 leak. However this iPhone 6 leak, which depicts another possible look at Apple’s redesign, comes from a notorious leakster that has been spot on with iPhone leaks in the past.

Over the past four months, we’ve seen iPhone 6 rumors and leaks pour out onto the web, showcasing everything from its possible screen size, to its alleged release date, to its processor, camera, and more. More recently, we’ve started to see leaks attempt to out the iPhone 6’s design. Apple is expected to deliver a redesign to follow up its iPhone 5s and we’ve started to see rumors firm up.

In the past two weeks, we’ve seen iPhone 6 mockups from China emerge showing what the iPhone 6 could look like when it arrives later on this year. The mockups, or models, could be based on inside information but it’s also possible that they are simply based on the plethora of iPhone 6 rumors we’ve seen surface in the past year or so.

Today, a well known Apple leaker has leaked another iPhone 6 mockup and like the others, it offers an up close and personal look at what Apple’s next iPhone might look like when it arrives on shelves.

Last year, Sonny Dickson leaked parts for both the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina Display before their arrival. Today, he’s leaked out what he claims are iPhone 6 dummy units. He doesn’t go into detail about their dimensions or their origins, but they look a whole lot like the other dummy units that we’ve seen emerge in recent days.

These new alleged iPhone 6 dummy photos are extremely clear and show off some of the features that we’ve seen emerge several times over in the rumor mill. It has a Lightning port, a power button that resides on the side as opposed to the top, and rounded volume buttons. This new mockup does not include any measurements though it appears to be extremely thin.

Dickson has claimed that the iPhone 6 may be as thin as 5.5mm. This smaller size could come in part from new display technology that reduces the thickness needed for display backlighting, as shared in a report on LEDInside of TrendForce.

iPhone 6 design rumors also suggest Apple may be able to deliver a new iPhone that is up to 26% thinner than the iPhone 5s. A recent leak from Ukrainian website suggests Apple is aiming for a smartphone as thin as 6mm, but Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities believes a 6.5 – 7mm thickness is easier for Apple to achieve. In a note shared by MacRumors, Kuo says that he believes that the iPhone 6 will come with a power button on right and narrower bezels. This lines up with what we’ve seen on these mockups.

Kuo accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s’ features before its launch last September so his information should be considered extremely credible.

This new leak comes shortly after a supposed iPhone 6 model was shown off next to two of the biggest smartphones on the market. Last week, the iPhone 6 mockup appeared next to the Samsung Galaxy S5, showing what the new iPhone 6 could look like next to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S smartphone. More recently, the mockup appeared next to the iPhone 5s showing potential differences between the two devices.

While these mockups all jive with recent iPhone 6 rumors, there is always a possibility that they are not based on the actual iPhone 6 design. In 2012, a leak and sources pointed to a iPhone with a teardrop design and one case company produced a large batch of iPhone cases based on this leak and their sources. The iPhone 5 did not arrive with the teardrop design. The iPhone 6 may not arrive with this design.

iPhone 6 rumors do almost exclusively point to an iPhone with a larger display. Since last year, rumors have pointed to two iPhone 6 models. One model is said to be between 4.5-inches and 4.7-inches in size, similar to the mockup seen here. The other iPhone 6 is thought to be somewhere around 5.5-inches or 5.7-inches. Both are said to have full HD resolution.

The biggest iPhone 6 leak so far comes from Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. Here is how he sees Apple’s iPhone 6 features panning out:

  • iPhone 6 Screen Size and Resolution – 4.7- inch (1334 x 750) 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080).
  • iPhone 6 Release Dates – 4.7-inch in September, 5.5-inch in Holiday season.
  • iPhone 6 Design – Power button on right, narrower bezels, larger iPhone 6 as two-hands needed.
  • iPhone 6 Camera – No major Megapixel bump, but added image stability.
  • iPhone 6 Specs – A8, 1GB RAM, Touch ID, 6.5mm to 7mm thickness, NFC.

iPhone 6 release date rumors continue to point to an arrival in the fall instead of in the summer. A report on the Industrial Commercial Times, claims that Pegatron earned 15% of Apple’s iPhone 6 shipments for a 4.7-inch iPhone model and that the device will be released in September, just like the iPhone 5s was last year.
