Apple’s iPhone 6 pre-order date is confirmed for tonight which means that consumers only have a few hours before the new iPhone release goes on sale for the first time. With consumers around the world gearing up for the start of early orders, we want to take a look at what prospective buyers shouldn’t expect from the iPhone 6 pre-order date.
Earlier this week, Apple finally debuted its brand new iPhone release. The company’s iPhone 5s successor is dubbed iPhone 6 and it will be coming in two different versions: The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. The devices push the iPhone 5s out of the flagship spot down to the company’s $99 price point. The iPhone 5c now shifts down to the free-on-contract slot.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both come with sleek and slim metal designs, A8 processor, upgraded cameras including Optical Image Stabilization on the iPhone 6 Plus, tons of storage options, Retina HD displays, a number of different price points, major U.S. carrier options, and Apple’s new iOS 8 operating system. They immediately become two of the top smartphones on the market and two devices worthy of a look.
At the company’s launch event, Apple confirmed many of the other pertinent iPhone details including the iPhone 6 release date and the iPhone 6 pre-order date. As expected, the gap between the iPhone 6 announcement and the iPhone 6 pre-order date is extremely tight and doesn’t leave much wiggle room for those thinking about an upgrade.
Apple’s iPhone 6 pre-orders start tonight at midnight at Apple and at a number of carrier partners. The timing means that consumers will have only have had two full days to consume all of the iPhone 6 details. That’s not a lot of time and we want to make sure you’re all prepared when the time comes.
With iPhone 6 pre-orders just hours away, we want to take a look at what we expect from the iPhone 6 pre-order date for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, a pre-order date that is now just hours away.
iPhone 6 Pre-Orders That Vanish
The iPhone 6 pre-order date kicks off at midnight tonight. At that point, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on sale at Apple, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. Many consumers are planning to stay up for the pre-order and that’s certainly smart. Both of these phones are expected to fly off virtual shelves ahead of the iPhone 6 release date. However, if you don’t want to wake up that early, iPhone 6 pre-orders will be available tomorrow.
Don’t expect iPhone 6 pre-orders to end in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow. RadioShack, Target and Walmart will all be taking pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus starting tomorrow morning and there’s a good chance that these retailers and other non-corporate carrier affiliated stores will continue taking reservations up through the iPhone 6 release date.
Shipping times will likely get crazy, and we could see Apple pull iPhone 6 pre-orders after a certain amount, but we don’t expect to see iPhone 6 pre-orders up and disappear after the smoke has cleared. There will still be ways to put in an early order.
iPhone pre-order dates can be crazy, especially around midnight. In the past, we’ve seen websites crash, orders fail to process, and all sorts of other mishaps and follies. It can be a pain if you’re not prepared and if you’re cranky because you woke up early to put in an order.
As we’ve mentioned, if you want to pre-order, you will be able to do so tomorrow. And while we can’t see into the future, we doubt that there will be any lines forming outside of these retail locations. In other words, we don’t expect consumers to run into any lines on the pre-order date. You should be able to walk into Walmart, wait a few minutes, and get your name in.
Most people that want the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus early are going to order online tonight during the initial wave of pre-orders instead of waiting until tomorrow.
iPhone 6 Pre-Order Date Surprises
Do not expect there to be any shenanigans on the iPhone 6 pre-order date. In other words, we’re not expecting anything but an extremely straightforward iPhone pre-order for the carriers and retailers that have confirmed the iPhone 6 release date for next Friday, September 19th.
In other words, do not expect any surprise retailers or carriers to emerge during tomorrow’s pre-order process. Don’t expect a big retailer that doesn’t sell the iPhone to all of a sudden announce iPhone 6 pre-order details. Don’t expect any surprise deals that chop the price of the iPhone 6 Plus down to more affordable levels.
What you’ve seen emerge in the days since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus announcements will probably be what you get.
iPhone 6 Release Date Delivery All Day
If you don’t wake up tomorrow to put in an iPhone 6 pre-order, and if you wait to go into a store until after work, don’t expect to get a release date delivery. We expect to see shipping times pushed back almost immediately for both phones and by morning, we should see online sales show shipping times in the weeks if not a month or more.
And while we don’t expect lines outside of retailers taking pre-orders, we do expect a steady flow of traffic into those stores. In other words, don’t expect to be able to hop in the car after work at 5PM, drive down to a store and get a pre-order that’s confirmed for September 19th release date delivery. We imagine that a few people will get lucky but in the past, we’ve seen day one pre-orders dry up pretty quickly both online and in physical retail locations.
If you want the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus the day that they come out, you’ll want to act fast.
Customer Service to Offer an Early Upgrade
Do not expect to hop on at midnight and be able to convince a carrier customer service agent to offer you an early upgrade. It’s not going to happen. This year we simply haven’t seen the early upgrades that we’ve been accustomed to pre-iPhone release. That’s one bad sign.
The other is that we rarely see carriers give into pressure. If your upgrade is months down the road, they’ll politely remind you of that and send you on your merry way. The only way it’s going to happen, unless you get lucky, is through an ETF or Early Termination Fee.
Paying an ETF will allow you to get out of your contract early though it’s going to cost you some extra money that’s dependent on how much time you have left. For some of you, it might be worth it, for others, it’s going to be expensive. Point is, don’t expect to sweet talk your way out of an ETF and into an early iPhone 6 upgrade. At least not tomorrow.
Tons of iPhone 6 Plus, 16GB, Gold iPhone 6 Stock
We typically see certain iPhone models go quicker than others and this year, we should see the same thing. If you show up late to tomorrow’s iPhone 6 pre-order date, don’t expect to be able to buy an iPhone 6 Plus (stock is said to be limited), 16GB versions of either device (these tend to be the most popular because they’re the cheapest) or the gold versions of the new iPhone (people love gold).
If you want any of those variants, especially a combination like a gold iPhone 6 Plus 16GB, you’d better show up tonight at midnight to pre-order otherwise the chances of you getting one on release date are going to be extremely slim.
Yes, you should be able to pre-order through retailers but again, those retailers will have uneven stock available on September 19th and there’s no guarantee you’ll get what you want.
