iPhone 6 With Larger Display Said to Heat Up Competition in 2014

The iPhone 6 will feature a larger screen and arrive in the middle of 2014 according to Jeffries analyst Peter Misek. This new claim comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook downplayed larger screen smartphones, telling investors there are too many “tradeoffs” for Apple to release an iPhone 6 with a larger display.

Apple is reportedly prepping an iPhone 5S for this fall and based on Cook’s comments it will feature the same 5-inch display as the iPhone 5, but Cook left the field open for an iPhone 6 with a larger display.

Misek previously claimed the iPhone 6 will arrive in June 2014, a “delayed” release date thanks to supply chain issues, which he also claims are behind Apple’s decision to push new products to the fall.

In a new note shared by Financial Post, Misek claims the iPhone 6 release is set for June 2014 and that the iPhone 6 will feature a larger screen.

The iPhone 6 will boast a larger screen, claims Misek. This will help the iPhone 6 compete with Android devices with larger, higher resolution displays.

The timing comes based on Apple’s supply chain being “primed for an iPhone 5S”, which Misek claims will take up to three quarters to transition to the iPhone 6.

The key differentiator for the iPhone 6 model will reportedly be a larger display. This note to investors did not address the specific size of a larger iPhone 6 display. Misek previously claimed the iPhone 6 display will grow to 4.8-inches, slightly larger than the HTC One display.

In December 2012 Misek described an iPhone 6 prototype with the following specs and features,

  • 4.8-inch Sharp IGZO Display
  • Retina+ Resolution
  • Apple A7 Quad-Core Processor
  • No Home Button
  • A New Design

In addition to these features an iPhone 6 would most likely incorporate any new iPhone 5S features. In the most recent note Misek claims Apple will prepare an iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader, a component that is rumored to incorporate into the home button. The iPhone 5S could include NFC technology, but Misek also notes Apple could rely on a barcode system for payments.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 features barcode technology that mimics a barcode by beaming light using the proximity sensor, a feature that makes barcodes readable by almost any scanner. If Apple incorporated similar technology into a mobile payment system users might be able to make payments at more locations.

Misek also points to a faster processor, better camera and new color options for the iPhone 5S.

Tim Cook did not say that Apple would not announce a larger screen iPhone in the future, only that consumers, “value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability.”

By blaming imaginary tradeoffs, Cook is able to manage expectations of consumers who may be tempted by larger screen devices like the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2.

“it will feature the same 5-inch display as the iPhone 5”

The same 4 inch display as the iPhone 5? That’s quite a mistake to make, because I have the iPhone 5, and I want to make sure that I wasn’t ripped off.

Oh joy…let’s all wait until middle of 2014 so we can finally have a larger screen on an iPhone…Apple really listens to what the people want…a year or two after android phone manufacturers have already done it…but we all know it isn’t a great idea until Apple does it.

Apple iphone company and their users best known as loyal sheep always criticized the bigger screens on the competition phones saying were ridiculous big, don’t fit in one hand, look uggly, etc… and now look at them, copying everybody’s else’s technology.
If they can’t fight the enemy better join them, right?
Now because iPhone will have bigger screen now will be acceptable and not criticized by their sheeps, eh?
What else are they copying to stay afloat?

haha apple saying a bigger screen is crap – just until they can retool and produce one in…wait for it…mid 2014!! at which point all the apple fanbois will also agree a bigger screen is better.

apple are pathetic. no wonder their share price is tanking, people are finally realing they’re being conned paying double for tech from a couple of years ago.

Since when would Apple jump the whole 1″ on the screen? The best they will do is 0.5″ which is 4.5″ without increasing the iPhone size at all. Look at the metal back cover on iPhone 5, it’s ~4.5″ 16:9 aspect ratio. Can Apple make the front screen the same size as back metal on iPhone 5? I bet they can. If they’ll do this to iPhone 5S, it will still sell like a hotcake this year.
