iPhone 6s Release Date Breakdown

Published

on

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are official and they will arrive later on this month to challenge top competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S6. With an iPhone 6s release date confirmed, we breakdown everything buyers need to know about the release date, iPhone 6s pre-orders and more.

For much of 2015, iPhone 6s rumors teased consumers with tales about the iPhone 6s features, iPhone 6s release date and iPhone 6s specs. Today, Apple finally confirmed the elephant in the room with an announcement at the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco.

As expected, the company will release two new iPhone models (not three) including a 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The two models bring several new features to the iPhone including an A9 processor, new display technology called 3D Touch, improved cameras, and a brand new rose gold color.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. Apple will stick with a 16GB base for another year.

iPhone 6s release date - 10

Rumors leading up to Apple’s media event pointed to a fast iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s release date in September. The timing made sense given Apple’s well-known iPhone release protocol that calls for an iPhone release within two weeks of launch.

While the smoke from the event is still settling, we do have a number of iPhone 6s release date details to share with those looking to pick up a brand new iPhone model in the near future.

Keep these details in mind as we push away from today’s event towards the the iPhone 6s pre-order date and iPhone 6s release date.

(Note: We’ll continue to add info as it arrives throughout the day.)

iPhone 6s Release Date

The iPhone 6s release date is confirmed for September 25th, though that date applies to select countries around the world.

Countries included in the initial iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus release date are Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, and the UK.

Apple tends to stagger its iPhone release dates over the course of several months and we expect the company to announce more countries in the weeks ahead. Apple says that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come to over 130 countries on over 400 carriers.

iPhone-6s-7

We haven’t heard anything about iPhone 6s shortages though we still recommend showing up for the iPhone 6s pre-order if you want the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus on release day.

It’s also important to note that this iPhone 6s release date applies to both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. They will be released alongside each other in most (if not all) countries around the world.

iPhone 6s Pre-Orders

iPhone 6s pre-orders will begin for select regions on September 12th, or, this Saturday. Apple and its carrier partners will start taking iPhone 6s pre-orders at midnight so if you want to buy an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus the second they go on sale, you’ll need to stay up late (or wake up early).

Unlike Android phones, iPhone pre-orders typically don’t arrive until the actual release date. We might see a few devices arrive early but you shouldn’t expect a majority of shipments to emerge before the September 25th date.

Those of you that don’t pre-order the iPhone 6s will be able to buy an iPhone 6s at an Apple Store starting at 8AM on September 25th. Lines for the iPhone 6s release date are already starting to form at some locations so we should see lines outside many stores next week.

It also looks like Apple will do in-store reservations for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

iPhone 6s U.S. Release Date

As expected, the U.S. iPhone 6s release date is confirmed for September 25th, the first day of availability. The U.S. is a key market for Apple and its rivals so its inclusion in the initial batch of iPhone 6s release regions doesn’t come as a surprise.

AT&T iPhone 6s

The AT&T iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are confirmed and the carrier will be offering the iPhone 6s the second it goes on sale.

iPhone 6s Dimensions

Just remember, you won’t be able to buy the AT&T iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s on-contract through the Apple Store. The only way to buy the AT&T iPhone 6s on contract is through AT&T.

AT&T’s also tacked on a $15 AT&T Next upgrade fee ahead of the iPhone 6s release date and it has also upped the activation fee to $45.

Sprint iPhone 6s

The Sprint iPhone 6s release is also confirmed. And like AT&T, it will release the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in late September.

T-Mobile iPhone 6s

T-Mobile will carry the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus and it will be stocking it when it arrives later on in September.

We should see John Legere and T-Mobile confirmed more details later today and we’ll update this post when it does.

U.S. Cellular iPhone 6s

The nation’s fifth largest carrier should also stock both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus and it should have them on sale on or around September 25th. We should know more in the near future.

Verizon iPhone 6s

The Verizon iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are confirmed for September and they will be sold online and in physical Verizon locations.

iPhone-6s

It’s important to note that Verizon will not be selling the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s on-contract. The nation’s largest service provider killed two-year contracts ahead of the iPhone 6s release date and it won’t be bringing them back.

It does look like Apple will be selling the Verizon iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on-contract. Apple says that on-contract pricing will vary.

Verizon will also be offering early upgrades for its customers so if you’re getting close to an upgrade, you’ll want to investigate your eligibility ahead of the iPhone 6s pre-order date. You can do that through Apple’s website.

Other iPhone 6s Carriers

Smaller pre-paid and regional carriers will also stock the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Carriers like C Spire are expected to release the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on September 25th.

Retailers

Key retailers like Best Buy and Walmart should carry the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus though it’s not clear if they will be taking pre-orders. We should see these details emerge in the near future as companies confirm their plans.

iPhone 6s Deals

If you’re looking to shave a few dollars off the iPhone 6s price, you might want to look into a trade-in at a company like Gazelle. Carriers are doing switcher trade-ins ahead of the iPhone 6s release date.

iPhone 6s pre-orders date and time

We don’t expect retailers to offer iPhone 6s price cuts right off the bat. If you’re looking for an iPhone 6s deal, you might have to wait until Black Friday or longer. Some of the best iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus deals emerged months after their release.

iPhone 6 Price

It’s worth noting that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus price have dropped at Apple and they will also drop at retailers and carriers around the world, including here in the United States.

No surprises here. The iPhone 4 will not be getting iOS 9 and iPod touch models older than the fifth-generation variant will stay on iOS 7 and below.  The iOS 9 update is the fifth major update for the iPad 2 and the fourth major iOS update for the iPhone 4s.

It's also worth noting that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be using the iOS 9 update as both will run the software right out of the box.
