The iPhone hasn’t seen a memory upgrade since the iPhone 5 was boosted to 1GB of RAM, which was double that of the iPhone 4s. However, a new report suggests that the iPhone 6s will receive 2GB of RAM.
According to a report from a Taiwanese site TechNews, the iPhone 6s will come with a generous memory upgrade for the first time since the iPhone 5, and it will boast LPDDR4 memory instead of the current LPDDR3 memory that’s used in the iPhone 6. The newer memory essentially doubles the bandwidth to 34GB/s from 17GB/s, allowing for much faster performance. And perhaps the best part is that it doesn’t consume any more power than LPDDR3 memory, so it’s a win-win.
Many other smartphones on the market currently sport 2GB of RAM or higher, as that now seems to be the standard, but Apple has stuck with 1GB of RAM for a while now, mostly because iOS is so efficient that the device really doesn’t need more than that. However, it looks like Apple may be in for some big changes with iOS 9 that 2GB of RAM could be needed, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see.
iPhone 6s rumors have been frequently popping up recently, which is a little odd, as we usually don’t see iPhone rumors pop up until the spring time at the earliest.
Recently, it’s been rumored that the iPhone 6s could come with a dual-lens camera system, which would offer better image quality, thanks to improved low-light capabilities, as well as the possibility to offer optical zoom in the iPhone for the first time ever.
Two-lens camera systems in smartphones are nothing new by any means, as the HTC One M8 includes two lenses, but it’s certainly something that isn’t common, and if it’s a system that will drastically increase image quality, we wouldn’t doubt if Apple was at least checking it out and testing it as we speak.
Of course, there’s no doubt that the next iPhone will be able to take much better photos than the iPhone 6, and that’s something we expect, but we’ll have to wait until next year to really find out what Apple has in store for the iPhone 7’s camera.
Furthermore, rumors have suggested that the iPhone 6s’s display will come with “Force Touch” technology that will also appear in the Apple Watch when it eventually releases in the next couple of months.
On the Apple Watch, Force Touch allows users to essentially initiate certain actions based on how hard they press down on the screen. For instance, on the Apple Watch, a heavy press could bring up a menu of sorts, while a light tap would select something. Theoretically, it’s similar to how left-click and right-click work on a mouse, and we could easily see that type of technology come to the iPhone at some point.
We’ve also heard ramblings that Apple could use OLED in the iPhone 6s display. While OLED displays are far better than LCD screens, it costs more to manufacture, so it’ll be interesting to see how OLED displays on the iPhone will affect its price if it’s indeed true.
In an OLED display, each pixel is made up of an organic material (hence the name: Organic Light-Emitting Diode) that emits light when an electrical current is passed through it. Because of this, OLED displays do not require a backlight, allowing them to be thinner and lighter than normal LCD displays. This also makes it possible to bend and curve OLED displays, allowing Apple to play around with a lot of different designs.
OLED displays are becoming more and more popular these days, as many new HDTVs are coming with OLED technology and some new smartphones are also arriving with OLED screens. However, it’s still a very new technology, and we don’t blame Apple for waiting a bit before using such a display.
