iPod Touch 6th Gen Release Nears as Apple Cuts Price

As we approach the time window of when Apple could launch a new 6th-generation iPod Touch, the company has made its refurbished iPod Touch models more affordable than ever. Apple has lowered the price of the refurbished 4th-generation iPod Touch down to just $89.

While the 4th-generation iPod Touch is almost four years old heading into next month, $89 isn’t too bad of a price for a refurbished unit. This will get you an 8GB model of the “iPhone without a phone” and allow you to experience iOS for less than $100. Previously, the device was marked at $129.

It doesn’t run iOS 7 unfortunately, but it does include a Retina display for crystal clear and sharp images, making it one of the best displays on the market back when it first reigned. Some may still argue that the Retina display on the iPhone 4 and 4th-generation iPod Touch are still top notch.

While the device may be outdated and still uses the older 30-pin connector, it still has a place for many users. Some frugal buyers may use it as their main media device, while others might grab one as a backup. We also can see the 4th-gen iPod Touch being used as a dedicated device for many users, such as an Apple TV remote, a workout iPod, or an older mobile gaming system that you can throw around without feeling bad about it.

Plus, this was also the first iPod Touch to include a rear camera for taking photos, so you could even use it as a backup camera of sorts. Plus, the front-facing camera can turn the device into a cheap FaceTime machine; but it for a loved one and FaceTime with them whenever you want.

The iPod Touch was last updated in 2012 when the 5th-generation model was released. However, the only updates that the device has seen since is new color options and a slightly lower price. It’s possible Apple could release a 6th-generation iPod Touch next month when they announce the iPhone 6, but we’re not holding our breath.

We all know that the iPod is slowly making its way out the door, but for years Apple was trying to ignore that fact and attempt to keep the business alive, even if they knew that there was really nothing they could do. iPod sales have kept declining year-over-year with no good ending in sight. However, earlier this year, Apple finally acknowledged its declining iPod business, possibly marking it the start of a phase out.

Several rumors have reported that 2014 won’t be the year of a new iPod Touch, but we usually take rumors like this with a grain of salt. The iPod Touch hasn’t received a major overhaul since 2012, and it’s definitely time for updated hardware.

However, reports say that Apple will put more focus on the iWatch this year, rather than the iPod Touch, which is probably smart on their front, but sad for consumers who have been looking forward to a new model coming out.

Of course, it’s at the state where we wouldn’t be surprised either way. A 6th-generation iPod Touch could release in the fall along with the iPhone 6, or we could also easily see Apple skip an iPod Touch refresh yet again in favor of putting more focus on the iWatch, which will have a much richer return on investment for sure.

The iPod Touch has long been thought of as the “iPhone for budget-minded consumers” of sorts, giving you close to the same experience of an iPhone, but without the hefty monthly service charges.

While $89 is a great price for a refurbished iPod Touch, you can actually find 5th-generation models selling for under $100 on eBay for the 16GB variants if you look hard enough, while most listings are selling for around $150. That’s about the cheapest place that you’ll find with the latest iPod Touch, but if you opt for the 16GB model, you won’t get the camera or the convenience of more color options.

I would love that, actually, Andy. I like to mostly keep my music and phone separate…and I like to have the option of music videos or a movie too. But since I have a phone, I don’t even need or want wifi or web browsing for my ipod. Just give me loads of memory, music, and the ability to watch some downloaded videos/movies, and I’m good.

I have been wishing for a six inch IPOD touch with a large memory bank for a very long time… If only Apple realised the value of such a size in a product of this type….Such a pocket friendly / purse friendly gadget would make it the most craved for device for many millions around the planet….Apple could even name it be BABY IPAD…..or jumbo ipod touch…. whatever their marketing people want to name it as long as such a product is made for sale ….as soon as possible….
