Apple highlighted the productivity aspect of its iPhone event today with new announcements surrounding iWork for iOS. iWork consists of Keynote, a presentation app, Pages, a document-creation and editing app, and Numbers, a spreadsheet app. In addition to these iWork apps, there’s also iMovie for creating and editing full HD movies, as well as iPhoto for more advanced photo management than the preloaded Photos app on the iPhone. And while these apps do enhancement the productivity and content creation aspect of the iPhone and iPad, the best news of the day is that the apps now are free on all new iOS devices.
When customers pick up a new iOS 7 device, they’ll be welcomed with a start screen that will allow them to download the apps for free.
These apps used to cost anywhere between $5 and $10 per title. The move by Apple to make these apps free comes as the company is facing more competition in the productivity space from Google and Microsoft. Google is offering access access to its cloud document service for free through Google Drive and there is a compatible app for iOS. The company had also acquired QuickOffice to allow Google business customers free access to more advanced tools. Microsoft recently made its Office app available for cloud subscribers on iOS.
The move to make iWork free was predicted when Apple opened up its iCloud cloud service to users with the launch of iOS 7 beta for developers. With iCloud, web access to iWork was given away for free to developers over the summer. Now, with on-board apps for free, users will have an even smoother experience that doesn’t require Internet connectivity to have access to what Apple calls the best productivity suite around.
