James Kendrick Seems Smitten with the Viliv S5 Premium UMPC

Published

s5-at-the-buxJust as the news about the Origamiportal being shut down is circulating, James Kendrck has perked up some interest in the UMPC form factor with the Viliv S5 Premium UMPC that he’s currently reviewing.   I’ve long given up on the UMPC form factor as originally conceived but when jk starts raving about something it got my attention. There was also some interesting discussion of his on the recent MobileTechRoundup podcast.

Seeing pictures of this with a Stowaway BlueTooth Keyboard left me nostalgic, that’s for sure. I’ve still got mine lying around somewhere and really enjoyed using it and something tells me that those keyboards will become collectors items sometime in the future. I’m anxious to see how jk’s further experiences go with this. That said, I’m still not convinced there’s much of a market out there for this type of device whether we call it a UMPC or a MID given the way things are going these days, but you never know.

Man, the first thing that jumped out at me was the Stowaway keyboard. I never had the bluetooth one but used the direct-connect model with my Palm III back in the day. A very cool gadget. Anybody got a bluetooth one for sale?

There is a market for these, but its a very price sensitive niche market.

I use them for data collection for Time and Attendance.
I bought Q1 Ultras for about the same price as dedicated data terminals, but I can retask these later should our needs change.

Many of the models I’ve seen are either too expensive, or underpowered.
