L8 SmartLight Uses 65 LEDs for Silent Notifications for Phones

Kickstarter projects range from silly ideas that get very little funding to big ideas that hit their goal many times over. The L8 SmartLight is in the middle of its Kickstarter campaign, but we think it falls right in the middle of the two extremes.

The L8 SmartLight team describes their device as the “soundless speaker.” It’s a small square with 64 LEDs on one side, and a giant RGB LED on the back. Every LED can produce a variety of colors, so the 8×8 array on the front can display simple images while the back LED produces ambient lighting.

The first part of the demo video shows the party uses for the L8 to create ambient lighting, but the second half is a bit more interesting. The L8 can connect to smartphones and PCs trough Bluetooth. Once connected the device can present users with notifications. Users can set these notifications for anything from email and social network alerts to the weather and sports scores.

With the L8’s Android and iOS app users can program the device to display notifications based on simple parameters. The notifications all use if/then statements similar to IFTTT. The app can also set moods for the device, and users can connect with their friends who also have L8s and see the moods of their devices.

Backers can get their own L8 in November of this year for $69. That’s a pretty good deal for the device. The L8 definitely isn’t for everyone, but for users who just want a simple way to get notifications without all the constant noises of their devices, it sounds like a great device.

Looks great but it’s a bit expensive to be part in a bigger product (. 65$ + the product = a bit expensive )
