Consumers hoping for a larger iPhone may get their wish but not until 2014 as a new report claims that Apple may be cooking up a $330 iPhone model with a larger screen and a plastic design.
Rumors this year have been swirling about Apple’s iPhone plans for 2013. So far, rumors have suggested that Apple may be planning a dueling iPhone launch that includes the iPhone 5S, a higher-end model, and a cheaper iPhone made of plastic aimed at emerging markets. Previously, there had been rumors of a larger iPhone model dubbed iPhone+ or iPhone Math debuting this year. The original source of that information later backtracked on that information.
Now, a new report claims that a larger iPhone model is indeed coming but it won’t be here in time to compete with large screen phones like the Galaxy Note 2 and instead, will be on shelves at some point in 2014.
The new information comes Japanese blog Macotakara, which has been accurate in the past. The site claims that Apple is working on a larger iPhone and plans to release the device in 2014 for a price around $330.
It’s said to feature a plastic polycarbonate body, similar to the plastic designs of earlier MacBook Pro models, specifically one from 2010. The device is also said to have a 4.5-inch display which is .5 inches larger than the current iPhone’s display and a full inch smaller than the screen on the Galaxy Note 2. In fact, the display is smaller than most high-end Android smartphones including the recently announced HTC One which sports a 4.7-inch 1080p display.
This larger iPhone is also said to have a similar design to previous iPhone models with a home button installed below the device’s display.
It’s unclear if this device would be dubbed iPhone 6 or if it would launch alongside the iPhone 6 with a different name. It’s also unclear as to when consumers might expect the device to arrive.
Current rumors suggest that Apple will be releasing an iPhone 5S, a device with an iPhone 5 design and upgraded hardware, and possibly a cheaper iPhone model along with it. This report suggests that this phone may in fact be the cheaper iPhone model which could mean that we will only see one iPhone, the iPhone 5S, arrive in 2013.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that it has been looking at new product categories and an iPhone with a larger display could very well be one of those categories.
