App folders, better pictures and support for Bluetooth LE are rolling out to users in the Nokia Lumia Black update beginning today.
Nokia detailed the updated features users can expect when their Nokia Lumia Windows Phone finally gets the update sometime in the next few weeks.
While most of the update isn’t completely new, the Lumia Black Update is already available on the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1020, there are few surprises for users to get excited about.
The first of these new features is the option to create folders for store apps of the same variety. For example, users will finally be able to put all of their photo related apps in one place. Speaking of photo apps, Nokia is introducing Nokia Refocus, another new exclusive photo application that allows Lumia Windows Phone users to adjust what areas of a picture they want to focus on.
Lumia Black also includes a refreshed version of Glance that allows users to surface notifications for phone calls, messages, emails appointments and more on their device’s display when it’s in sleep mode. Users will be able to send those photos quickly with the updated Nokia Beamer app too, and Nokia’s added the ability for other files to be shared through Beamer as well.
Finally, Nokia is combining the Nokia Pro Camera and Smart Camera into one single interface that can replace Windows Phone’s default camera app. Picture enthusiasts will also appreciate the updated algorithms and new DNG file format for higher-fidelity photos as well.
Nokia says users with the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 will get prompts asking them to update their device starting today. Nokia’s software update tracker lists the Lumia 928, Lumia 920, Lumia 820, Lumia 822, Lumia 820, Lumia 620 and Lumia 521 as still waiting for approval on AT&T on T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T.
Users looking to update their device should head to their device’s Settings app, tap phone update, and then tap check for update. The app folders functionality isn’t exactly specific to the Lumia Black. The app that powers it is now available in the Windows Phone Store.
