In a new promotion to get owners of smartphones running rival platforms to its own Windows Phone 8 operating system, Microsoft is giving away a free Nokia Lumia 1020 or Nokia Lumia 1520 to switchers. Interestingly, though, the deal is very limited, and you must either own an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphone to qualify. Moreover, you’ll have to own one of the older models to partake in this promotion as a new device won’t net you a new Lumia.
According to the Microsoft Store website, the deal is only valid in stores–sorry online shoppers, you’ll need to look elsewhere–and it is only valid through March 2, 2014. Right now, interested parties who own an iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, or Samsung Galaxy S2 will be eligible. Interestingly, though, if you own a newer iPhone or Galaxy smartphone, Microsoft apparently does not want your business at this time, at least not through this promotion.
“Trade up and treat yourself to a new Windows Phone when you trade in your iPhone 4, iPhone 4s or Galaxy S2,” Microsoft said. “Choose from the Nokia Lumia 1020 or Nokia Lumia 1520 and see which one best suits your needs.”
Additionally, you must also sign a two-year contract with AT&T at this time, and this deal is valid for both new customers and those wishing to upgrade an existing line. Another requirement is that though these phones may be considered older models when compared to current flagships like the iPhone 5s and the Galaxy S4, Microsoft says that the devices must be in good working condition for the trade-in.
If you own a different device than what’s being offered here, Microsoft does have another trade-in offer. If you have a working smartphone or tablet, you can bring that device in and receive up to $250 of store credit, which you can use to buy any Windows Phone smartphone in the store–including the mentioned Lumia models–or any tablet or PC that Microsoft sells.
Microsoft had in the past been aggressively going after Google with its Scroogled commercials and campaigns, saying that you can get more with Windows and Windows Phone than you can with Google products. The company had also been on the offensive with Apple as well, pitting its Surface RT and Surface Pro models, both now in their second generations, against Apple’s iPad in television spots.
