After searching for a new CEO for the past five months, Microsoft has confirmed that Satya Nadella will be the software company’s new chief executive, making him only the third one in the company’s history. Reports of Nadella taking over the helm surfaced late last month, so we’re certainly not surprised by today’s news.
Nadella has worked at Microsoft for over 20 years and previously served as the vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group.
Along with Nadella’s new position, Microsoft founder Bill Gates is stepping down as chairman, but will get a new position at the company, with the official title of Technology Advisor. This won’t decrease Gates’ time at Microsoft, but rather increase it. He says his role at the company will “substantially” increase, with “over a third of [his] time available to meet with product groups.”
Microsoft began its CEO hunt back in August when Steve Ballmer announced that he would retire within the next year, or whenever the board found a replacement. It was rumored for a while that the company was looking to hire Ford CEO Alan Mullaly, but it seems that an inside hire was the best move for Microsoft, and it’s easy to see why with a guy like Nadella. He has over 20 years of experience with Microsoft alone and has pretty much moved around the company and tried it all, making him a good fit for the chief executive role.
Nadella studied Electrical Engineering at Mangalore University in India before moving to the US to study computer science at the University of Wisconsin. He initially worked at Sun Microsystems before getting a role at Microsoft, starting off doing research for the company’s online services division. Since then, he’s had experience working with Office, Bing, and most recently Microsoft’s cloud efforts.
