Microsoft Introduces Its Own Tablet Called Surface for both RT and Windows 8

Here’s a quick summary post on what Microsoft is announcing today. Those who had their bets on Microsoft announcing that it was going to get into the hardware game and create a branded tablet are winners. Microsoft is on stage in LA announcing its own Tablet called Surface. (Sound familiar?) Microsoft announced a Surface for RT and a Surface for Windows 8 called Windows 8 Pro. In other words, Surface that runs on ARM and Surface that runs on Intel. We will be updating this post as we get more but here are some things we’ve learned.

The frame is magnesium and the device weighs in at 1.5lbs. The form factor is a 16×9 and the device is 9.3mm thin and contains full size USB 2 ports and two cameras. It also has a kickstand.  It will be ready when Windows 8 launches and no pricing is available at this point in time.

It also has a detachable multi-touch keyboard which sounds interesting and there is a second version keyboard that has tactile keys. It sounds like we’ve got a combo iPad and MacBook Air thing going on here, but either way Microsoft has input from your fingers covered on these new devices. Don’t know yet if these are standard or an accessory. Check out the video below.

Here are some more specs from  the Surface 2.0 site:

And yes, Tableteers, there is a stylus on the Windows 8 Pro edition. There are two digitizers, one for touch and one for digital ink. There’s a lot more to learn and we’ll bring you much more as we learn it.

Woah. My OneNote fantasy machine come to life! A 2lb, pen-enabled slate factor Tablet PC with a full 1920×1080 HD display. Well played, MS, well played. Samsung, Asus, Motion, and TabletKiosk are gonna have a hard time topping this thing. And I can finally stop waiting for HP to release a proper follow-up to the TC1100!

From the pictures, the stylus looks nothing like my n-Trig stylus for my HP Slate and a whole lot like my Motion’s Wacom Penabled stylus so I’d guess it’s a Wacom dual digitizer. Great for accuracy less so for battery life.

I’m excited but I’ll probably hold out in hopes of something smaller and lighter. My bricked OQO 02 still sits on my desk – I just can’t bring myself to recycle it.

    I’d like a 13 or 14 inch version with 8MB.

A possible replacement for my aging Fujitsu P1620, Microsoft revives TouchStream before Apple, but how much will this cost?
