Microsoft Slashes the Price of the Surface Pro by $100

In what could be part of a concerted effort to ignite a fire sale, Microsoft has cut the price of the first-generation Surface Pro.

Microsoft began showcasing the deal on its own online Microsoft Store on Tuesday. Those who purchase a Surface Pro through the website or at one of its retail locations will get $100 off any first-generation Surface Pro tablet. This deal means that users can pick up a new Surface Pro for as little as $699 if they’re comfortable with having just 64GB of on-board storage.

While the deal is official, it isn’t permanent. The coupons terms stipulate that users must purchase the tablet while supplies last. It also indicates that Microsoft has “limited inventory available.” Users shouldn’t wait to pick up the device if they are interested. Even if Microsoft doesn’t run out of Surface Pro devices, the sale will end on December 31st.

Users who need more than the 64GB of storage available in the device’s base model can pick up a Surface Pro with 128GB of storage for $799 and a Surface Pro with 256GB of storage for $999. Users can add more storage to any of these configurations using the Surface Pro’s built-in microSD card slot.

The original Surface Pro has 4GB of RAM, a 3rd-generation Intel Core i5 processor and a 10.6-inch 1080p display. Unlike the Surface 2 and the Surface RT, the Surface Pro also includes a built-in digitizer and stylus accessory that allows users to take hand written notes without buying extra hardware.

Today’s price cut comes just days after Microsoft began selling the Surface Pro 2, the successor to the Surface Pro. That version boasts an Intel Haswell processor that allows it to get 75% more battery life than the original Surface Pro.

Those who want a Surface Touch or Type Keyboard will also have to factor that cost into their buying decision. A Touch Cover 2 costs an additional $119. The Type Cover 2 will set users back $129.
