If you’re looking for a Surface Tablet this Christmas it looks like you’ll have better luck with your local retailer than shopping online. Microsoft, Best Buy, and Staples are all reporting that both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 are out of stock and/or not available for shipping. Amazon is still listing a few models available with limited stock available.
Calls to local Chicago retailers including the Microsoft Store, Best Buy, and Staples all yielded reports of some stock for both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 still being available. Microsoft is still listing the original Surface Pro and a refurbished Surface RT as available.
So, it looks like early reports that Surface Tablets were selling well were a good sign for Microsoft. Of course, you have to caveat any news of products selling out with the fact that we don’t know how many devices were actually made available for sale.
Microsoft’s newest edition Surface Tablets, the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 were released in October. That release has been accompanied by a vigorous marketing and advertising campaign and both new devices received more positive reviews than the original device releases. Changes made to Windows 8.1 have improved both Tablets. Microsoft also aggressively marketing the original Surface RT and Surface Pro during the holiday season.
The Surface Pro 2 runs the full version of Windows 8.1 with prices beginning at $899 for a 32GB model and topping out for a 512GB model. Microsoft is listing all models as sold out. The Surface 2 runs Windows RT on an ARM processor and can not run legacy Windows Apps, only Metro or Modern UI Apps. The Surface 2 starts at $449 for a 32GB model and $549 for a 64GB model.
