Microsoft to cut 5,000 Jobs

I don’t think there is anyone who won’t be excited by some glimmer of good news about the economy, but unfortunately, we aren’t there yet. Word comes this morning that Microsoft will be cutting up to 5,000 jobs in the next 18 months with 1,400 getting a pink slip immediately.

Of course Microsoft cites declining revenues and Microsoft is saying they can’t offer profit and revenue guidance for the rest of the year due to the volatile economic environment. From my perspective trying to keep a small theatre open I can certainly agree with not being able to predict.

Tough times.

In all fairness, over the past 3 weeks, Microsoft has cut a LOT of frivolous spending and construction projects and the like in what I would hope is an effort to significantly minimize that number. 5,000 is a lot of people no doubt about it, but out of 90,000 employees worldwide, it’s a much smaller cut than most analysts were expecting (I had heard numbers around 14-20,000 from ZDNet and others).

Oh and for the record, I do feel for the 5,000 being released especially in these times. I wish them well in their employment efforts elsewhere.

There is nothing fair about a highly profitable company laying off workers in this economy. Microsoft earned a $4B profit last quarter while other companies are losing money and going under. Unless they’re laying off workers with million dollar salaries, it’s an indefensible move.
