Video game developer and publisher Electronic Arts has teased its new Mirror’s Edge game for Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 for years, but it’s only now that we’re learning more about Mirror’s Edge’s release window for both consoles and Windows PCs. In addition to that, we’re finding out more about a potential Titanfall 2 release window.
Electronic Arts revealed the Mirror’s Edge release window this week in companion documents for its Fiscal Year 2016 earnings outlook. Mirror’s Edge for Xbox One, PC and PS4 were among the games and services included in the company’s launch breakdown. According to that document we can expect Mirror’s Edge to launch in the fourth quarter of Electronic Art’s 2016 fiscal year. This places the Mirror’s Edge launch sometime early next year. The 2017 fiscal year ends on April 1st 2017.
Besides Mirror’s Edge the calendar also revealed new releases of Need for Speed for later this year on consoles and Windows PCs and a new edition of Plants of Zombies around the same time as the Mirror’s Edge release.
Electronic Arts was careful to note in these documents that there are games coming that it hasn’t announced yet, leading some to believe that there was still hope for a Titanfall 2 release within this calendar year or so. We now know that hope is a bit misguided. Electronic Arts Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen told media and investors on the earnings call to not expect a Titanfall 2 release to happen until sometime in the company’s 2017 fiscal year, according to IGN. That effectively rules out Titanfall 2 from now until March 31st 2016, which is when the 2016 fiscal year ends for Electronic Arts.
Electronic Arts and video game developer Respawn Entertainment only recently confirmed there is a Titanfall 2 in the works, though many already suspected that was the case after the original game’s success. Titanfall is a fan favorite with gamers. Launched on the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PCs, the first-person shooter users a collection of new tricks to make the shooting genre interesting. Players can wall run, double jump and call on giant robots to assist them in any battle. Reportedly, Titanfall 2 is coming to the Xbox One and PS4. Many new game franchises launch without building a fanbase as large as Titanfall.
To be clear, Mirror’s Edge isn’t a new series like the original Titanfall was. Instead, it’s a reboot of the same game that launched in 2009. That’s why some are still referring to it as Mirror’s Edge 2 instead of simply Mirror’s Edge. In Mirror’s Edge gamers take on the role of Faith, a well-trained combatant with uncanny climbing abilities. Faith lives in a distant future where the government is monitoring and controlling all information. Faith uses her skills as a courier to relay messages between people beyond what the government can monitor.
Electronic Arts revealed the new Mirror’s Edge just as the new generation of consoles was being detailed by Microsoft and Sony. This new game is being tailor-made to depend on the raw power and upgraded graphics processors that the latest consoles and PC internals can provide. The original Mirror’s Edge launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but this new one will only be available for the Xbox One and PS4.
With a release that close, it’s very likely that we’ll hear a lot more about Mirror’s Edge from Electronic Arts at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, California. At the very least, we’ll likely see a video trailer giving us a look at the game’s graphics and play mechanics. So far, Electronic Arts hasn’t shown much. E3 2015 starts June 16th and lasts until June 18th.
