MLB Triples Support For Using iPhone as a Ticket in 2013

This season a total of 13 MLB stadiums will support Apple’s Passbook service, giving more baseball fans the chance to use virtual tickets to watch their favorite teams.

According to GigaOm at the start of the season the Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs will accept virtual tickets via Passbook at their respective stadiums. Those seven teams join the three teams who first accepted Passbook tickets last September.

The first three teams to use Passbook were the New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals.

At the start of the 2013 season only ten stadiums will accept Passbook tickets, the other three stadiums will join the program at some point during the season. MLB wouldn’t discuss what those others teams are, however. When the other three teams start accepting Passbook tickets almost half of the MLB will use the app.

MLB teams that support Passbook will also support the new Samsung Wallet when Samsung brings the app to its smartphones sometime in the near future. It’s not clear when that app will come out, however.

MLB was one of Apple’s launch partners for Passbook last September. The league’s support of the app is an example of the league’s reputation as the most tech-savvy professional sport in the U.S.

For smartphone users the MLB also offers its popular MLB At Bat app which gives users almost everything they could want about their favorite teams. The free version of the app gives users the latest news from across the league as well as stats about each game.

The new MLB At Bat also gives users access to full game audio for users who pay either the $19.99 for the app upfront or $2.99 every month. The subscription includes every game in the regular season and postseason up to the World Series.
