One of the perks of my job is the ability to work from home, or really, from anywhere.
One thing I’ve learned in my time with mobile technology is, if you don’t have the right tools, you’re setting yourself up for failure. This is important to remember, because mobile connectivity is still at the point that it can break, and ruin your day.
After spending a lot of time working mobile these days, I felt obligated to share my must have tools. You probably already have the most expensive tools, and the rest can be picked up at almost any electronics store.
With that, here are all the tools you need to turn the back of a compact car into an Office.
Solid Notebook – Don’t try to go super mobile and work from a tablet if you really need to get work done. While you can try to work on the iPad or other Android tablets, you cannot beat a good notebook. The MacBook Air is a favorite of mine, but I also love the HP ProBook 5330m, which has backlit keys and a portable form factor.
Mobile Hotspot – If you have a newer cell phone, you can probably add a mobile hotspot plan to your account for $20 to $30 a month.
Unlike a dedicated hotspot, you can add this to your plan on a month by month basis. This makes for a budget friendly add on.
Power Inverter – No matter how long your battery claims to last, if you want to get serious about working on the go, you need access to power.
I love this compact Radio shack model that I found on clearance. You can pick these up at Amazon, or at your local electronics store at affordable prices. Mine has a USB charging port that handles many phones, but not those with major power demands.
Car Charger Splitter – If you have a multitude of gadgets, or travel with friends, you absolutely need this accessory. For about $10 you can triple your available car charging ports. Even if you don’t get any other accessory, this is a great addition to your mobile toolkit.
I use the splitter with a small USB adapter and the power inverter as part of my gadget go bag. I never go on a trip, where I am working.
