The two most popular Android devices consumers were excited about for 2014 have already been announced and released this year, but the next big thing many are taking interest in is the Moto 360, and other wearable devices running Android or iOS.
Earlier this year Google announced an all-new project called Android Wear. Aiming to deliver an impressive user interface and experience all running Android, designed for wearable technology. The first two devices will be the LG G Watch, and the extremely exciting Moto 360.
Ever since Motorola confirmed its plans to offer a timepiece and beautiful piece of jewelry first, that just so happens to also be a smartwatch running Android wear, consumers and enthusiasts alike have been awaiting more details. So far we’re still under the impression that Android Wear and both smartwatches will arrive “this summer” according to LG and Motorola, and today we’re getting our first real look at not only Android Wear, but the Moto 360 in the wild and being used.
Motorola made an announcement the same day Google officially unveiled Android Wear, but since both have been completely silent regarding more details. The Moto 360 instantly gained traction and has been a hot topic of debate over the past month, and today we’re finally seeing more of the upcoming wearable gadget.
Thanks to a new video provided by The Verge, we’re not only getting a look at the Moto 360, but a slight view of the software, and where Motorola is headed as a whole. For those interested in Android Wear and the Moto 360, you can skip forward to the 3:00 minute mark, but the whole video may be worthwhile for consumers and prospective buyers.
During the video we only get a few quick glimpses of the new Moto 360 smartwatch, but it’s the first real shot we’ve seen of this device actually being worn and used, rather than press photos from last month. The Moto 360 has been in and out of the news, but there’s still tons of questions that remain.
Motorola’s lead designer Jim Wicks talks about Motorola as a whole, moving back to Chicago as a company, and being bought out by Google and now Lenovo. The company has seen its share of changes, but are still focused on delivering excellent smartphones, and of course the Moto 360.
We see Wicks toy with the Moto 360 a few times, but of course refused to give The Verge a better look at the software, for obvious reasons. We can clearly see this wearable device is extremely thin, low profile, and good looking. The side-button appears to turn the display on and off, which again only leaves us with more questions than answers.
Will we be able to have the display always on, or will it turn off to preserve power? Will voice commands turn it on, or is the dedicated side button the only way to interact with Android Wear, and the Moto 360? Those are just a few of many questions we’re already seeing from the video, but surely Google and Motorola will address them all as launch day approaches.
The small “M” logo won’t be present on retail units, as this is a developer model for testing, called dogfooding, but that’s about all we know thus far. Google has a lot in store for Android Wear, as does Motorola with the Moto 360, but we’re still another few months away from finding exactly what that is.
So far both LG and Motorola have stated we can expect to see their wearable watches powered by Android Wear “this summer” and multiple rumors have suggested LG will launch the new LG G Watch before the end of June. Google’s annual developer event is taking place the last week of June, and buyers can expect all the details and official information to arrive all week long before an official release and product launch.
The few seconds of screen-time we actually see the Moto 360 doesn’t answer any questions. It does however, give prospective buyers an early look at what we can potentially expect (or one variation at least) and teases buyers before the reveal and release date.
This summer we can expect a new LG G3 flagship smartphone to launch around a similar timeframe as the LG G Watch, and it’s possible the next Moto X will arrive in a similar fashion. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 are both already here, there’s still plenty of exciting new products arriving in the coming months. From everything detailed above, to even Apple’s own iWatch to take on Android Wear.
At the moment there are still tons of mysteries around Android Wear and the Google Smartwatch, but the one thing that is clear is we can expect them to arrive ahead of Apple’s rumored iWatch. We’ll continue looking for more details regarding the Moto 360, and update the moment we know more.
