Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has confirmed that the company is working on a new tablet, according to Engadget who spoke with the big wig about whether or not Motorola had plans to get back into the tablet market. “That’s something we are working on, but [there’s] nothing specific to talk about right now,” said Woodside.
Motorola previously made two Android tablets, called the Xoom and the Xyboard, both of which never ended up making a huge dent in the market. However, with the recent Google acquisition and the highly-anticipated, just-launched Moto X smartphone, it seems the company is in a good place to begin making another tablet — one that’s capable of actually creating some noise amongst consumers.
Motorola bet big on the Moto X’s customization features that allows users to select their own color combination out of a handful of colors to choose from using the Moto Maker customization software. No word on whether or not this Motorola tablet will use Moto Maker, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if the company allowed users to customize their own, as it seems to be a hot feature with the Moto X.
Furthermore, Woodside said that Motorola is planning to take a look at other form factors that use “some of the design cues, as well as technologies, from the Moto X.” This could mean that not only will a tablet be on the way, but possibly a larger Moto X smartphone as well. No other device is quite taking on the Samsung Galaxy Note series, so a larger, phablet-sized Moto X device could give Samsung a run for its money.
Woodside declined to comment further on the development of a tablet, but at we least have enough info that we’ll know to wait outside and look for a Motorola tablet come walking out. Release date is another subject altogether, however, but we probably won’t see a Motorola tablet until next year at the earliest. It’s possible we could see the tablet in the second half of 2014 — around the same time that the Moto X released, but it’s anyone’s guess at this point.
One thing’s for sure, though. Motorola is slowly stepping back from its DROID lineup to focus on other new products, and the Google acquisition is helping them with that. The Moto X seems like just the first step to other similar products in the future.
