Two new iPhone 6 rumors point to a big change for the iPhone 6 that could deliver a more expensive iPhone in 2014 and suggests we could see the 5-inch or larger iPhone arrive with some iPhone 5c styling.
Apple is undoubtedly working on a new iPhone for 2014, and iPhone 6 rumor suggest we could see two models with larger screens arrive to take the place of the iPhone 5s at the top of the iPhone product line. Apple is facing stiff competition from the Galaxy S5 and the new HTC One, and the 5-inch or larger iPhone 6 will likely go head to head with the Galaxy Note 4 this fall.
While iPhone 6 rumors don’t always sync up on the size of the new iPhone, we are seeing more evidence that Apple plans an iPhone 6 release for fall 2014, which would mark the fourth year in a row that the new iPhone arrived in September or October.
A new analyst note makes sense of a larger iPhone 6 and highlights how this iPhone could help Apple tempt Android users and convince those using older iPhones to upgrade. A new rumor from Japan points to a Galaxy Note 4 competitor with a larger phablet size screen and new color options similar to the iPhone 5c.
iPhone 6 Price Hike
The iPhone 6 price could jump $100 according to Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest. In a note shared on Business Insider this morning Hargreaves outlined his thoughts on the iPhone 6, explaining that Apple can likely charge a premium for the larger screen iPhone, which may come with a higher cost to make.
In 2013 Apple shoppers largely ignored the cheaper iPhone 5c, which leads to his conclusion that Apple’s customers will pay a $100 premium for an iPhone 6 with a larger screen. This could leave the iPhone 5s at $199 and iPhone 5c at $99, depending on what else Apple has in the works. Additionally the report indicates that Apple could see an increase in iPhone 6 upgrades from existing iPhone owners.
iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch Display
In his note Hargreaves believes Apple is only planning an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display, and not the larger model rumored from other sources. In a separate rumor on Macotakara we hear more details about two iPhone 6 models, one with a 4.7-inch display and a larger 5.7-inch display model.
While many of the recent iPhone 6 rumors and reports do not agree on two iPhone 6 releases in 2014, we are starting to see reports align for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. It is still too early to call it confirmed, and there is a chance that an echo chamber of rumors creates this agreement, but we’re monitoring talk of a 4.7-inch iPhone closely.
iPhone 6 That Steals Android Users
Apple is facing stiff competition from Android devices that offer a much better user experience than two years ago, and we’ve seen a fair number of users switch from iPhone to Android for a larger screen. According to the investor note from Pacific Crest that could change with the iPhone 6.
In addition to appealing to users that skipped the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s as minor upgrades, Hargreaves estimates Apple could see 10 million iPhone 6 sales made to new users from Android.
iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5s vs iPhone 4s Dimensions
The Macotakara report includes possible iPhone 6 dimensions for the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display and for an iPhone 6 with a 5.7-inch display. These are not the official dimensions, but it does let us show a possible iPhone 4s vs iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 size comparison.
The image above shows what a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 could look like compared to the current iPhone 5s and the older iPhone 4s. The larger screen adds to the size of the device, but according to the report the devices are thinner.
- iPhone 4s – 115.5 × 62.1 × 9.3mm
- iPhone 5s – 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm
- iPhone 6 (4.7) -140 x 70 x 7mm
- iPhone 6 (5.7) – 160 x 80 x 7mm
The list above show possible iPhone 6 sizes compared to current iPhone models.
iPhone 6 with New Color Options
Another iPhone 6 rumor that surfaced alongside the dimensions is the rumor that the iPhone 6 with a 5.7-inch display will feature multiple color options borrowed from the iPhone 5c lineup. That’s not to say that the largest iPhone 6 will use a plastic design like the iPhone 5c or that it will use the same ‘c’ naming convention.
Apple currently sells the iPhone 5s in three colors; gold, silver and space gray. Samsung announced the Galaxy S5 in four colors, but it looks like only two will arrive at release in the U.S.
