Fighting for Windows notebook and tablet buyers over the summer buying season is always war and PC maker Lenovo is going into battle with a new slate of machines. The Lenovo Z51 and Lenovo Ideapad 100 are two new Windows notebooks tailored-made for two extremely different kinds of shoppers.
Lenovo announced the Lenovo Ideapad 100 and the Lenovo Z51 this week at Tech Wold 2015, a dedicated event that it’s holding this year in Beijing, China so that the world can take a look at its updated line of notebooks, tablets, 2-in-1s and PC accessories.
Costing just $249 is the Lenovo Ideapad 100. Lenovo will offer two models of this machine, the 14-inch model made for portability and a 15-inch model aimed at users who need a bigger display. At that base price many shoppers might not expect the Ideapad 100 machines to come with all of the ports and extras that they need, but most of what users would expect from a more expensive machines is present. There’s a single USB 3.0 port, a single USB 2.0 port, and HDMI out port, a media card reader, an audio jack and an Ethernet jack. Most notebooks don’t come with a physical network port at all, making that Ethernet jack a big deal for some. A front-facing 0.3 megapixel web camera, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n are included too.
Lenovo is offering a long list of upgrades with the Lenovo Ideapad 100. For example there’s that model coming with a 15-inch display and a higher price tag. Both the 14-inch and 15-inch Ideapad 100 will have specifications that can be updated online. Lenovo boasts that users will be able to choose “up to” an Intel BayTrail processor, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive or a 128GB solid state drive for their machine.
More sophisticated configurations will cost more than that $249 base price.
The Lenovo Z41 and Z51 are machines built for a very, very different kind of user. Forget just having the essentials, there are some people who need all the options, raw power and all the screen real estate that they can get their hands on. The Lenovo Z41 and Lenovo Z51 are for those people.
To provide a high-end media experience notebooks need a decent display, robust processor and great speakers. The Lenovo Z41 and Lenovo Z51 delivers on all those fronts, it seems. Lenovo says it will offer up to a latest-generation Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM. Every Lenovo Z41 will feature a 14-inch FHD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Every Lenovo Z51 will feature a larger 15-inch display with the same resolution. Optional JBL speakers with Dolby certification, 2 USB 3.0 ports, a single USB 2.0 port, a media card reader, an audio jack, Ethernet port, 1 megapixel camera, 802.11 a/c wireless internet technology and 4 hours of battery life are a constant for both machines, regardless of configuration.
In what is likely a prerequisite for Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system later this year, The Lenovo Z51 can be configured with an Intel RealSense 3D camera for its bezel. Previewed at the 2014 Consumer Electronic Show, Intel RealSense 3D cameras allow users to control their PC with hand gestures and more. Microsoft recently announced that Intel RealSense camera would also allow users to unlock their PCs in Windows 10 using a feature called Windows Hello.
The Lenovo Z41 and Lenovo Z51 will start at $499, though again, more sophisticated configurations from Lenovo’s website will cost more than that.
Lenovo says that the Lenovo Z41 and Lenovo Z51 machines will be available on its website beginning this June, just as the Back to School shopping season is in its early stages. The Lenovo Z51 with RealSense camera will only come with an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM for $599. The Lenovo Ideapad 100 will also arrive on store shelves for that astonishing $249 purchase price. All of these machines will come with Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 operating system. They’ll be upgradable to Windows 10 later in the summer.
