Samsung could be preparing to renter the high-end Windows Phone race in a big way. According to new rumors, the company is working on the Samsung SM-W750V or Samsung Huron for a launch on Verizon.
Leaker publication EvLeaks shared some details about the rumored upcoming Windows Phone handset on Twitter today. That post notes that the Samsung Huron “will be a Windows Phone on Verizon.” Though the post doesn’t go much into the device’s looks, it does indicate that fans of the Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone that debuted last year should find this device attractive saying, “it looks very similar to a late model Galaxy S.”
Unfortunately, there isn’t much more information to go on other than that. Though Evleaks alludes to having seen the device or pictures of the device itself, it hasn’t yet shared photos with the world at large. As such, we’re left to conclude that the Samsung Huron will feature the same curved edges and slightly sloped rear-casing as the Galaxy S4. The post didn’t include any information about build materials.
It also didn’t include any information about pricing or availability. As such, we don’t yet know when the Samsung Huron will launch on Verizon. We also don’t know what price Samsung is aiming for – though the comments comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy S4 does imply that it’ll be a high-end smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S4 includes a 5-inch display, powerful quad-core processor and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time that rumors of an upcoming Samsung flagship Windows Phone have surfaced. A device matching the Samsung Huron’s SM-W750V model number was included in a filing with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group last month. At the time that filing indicated that the device would boast LTE wireless data compatibility and a screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. If those specifications are accurate than the Samsung Huron is definitely a next-generation Windows Phone.
That Samsung is preparing to launch a new flagship smartphone on Verizon is great news for potential Windows Phone buyers on that carrier. Most estimates show that Verizon accounts for a majority of Windows Phone purchases in the United States. Unfortunately, the carrier’s line-up of Windows Phone isn’t all that robust. The Nokia Lumia 928, Lumia 822 and the Windows Phone 8X by HTC were launched roughly a year ago. None of these device’s processors and internal features compares to that of current-generation Android smartphones beyond their camera technology.
To be fair, Samsung already sells the Samsung ATIV Odyssey on Verizon. It also doesn’t directly compete with other high-end Android devices.
Nokia is rumored to be refreshing its Windows Phone line-up on Verizon as well. Details about the Nokia Lumia Icon have leaked for months. Unfortunately, there’s still no word yet on when it’ll launch either.
