Current Windows Phone 8 models today are limited to just a dual-core processor, up from the single-core CPU support on Windows Phone 7 models last year, but that is about to change as Nokia is beginning to test quad-core processors on an un-announced Windows Phone 8 model. The test was done using the GFXBench tool, which revealed that an unannounced Nokia phone with 4 cores was used for the test.
The benchmark shows that the phone is using the Qualcomm Adreno 305 processor for graphics. According to WMPU, the Adreno 305 with the quad-core processor performed very well, offering a 3 to 4 times increase in performance compared with the dual-core Snapdragon processor on the Lumia 620 model with the same Adreno 305 graphics.
Additionally, it is also revealed that the phone is using a 720p HD display. Rumors suggest that Microsoft would update support for 1080p full HD screens in the next update for the Windows Phone 8 platform. The same update would also support quad-core processor, which would place Windows Phone more competitively against Android handsets from a specs perspective. Historically, Windows Phone had lagged behind its rivals for more advanced specs, like higher display resolutions and multi-core processor architecture support; Microsoft in part says that the platform doesn’t need to compete on these specs as Windows Phone is quite fluid on its more limited processor support compared to rivals like Android.
It’s unclear when a quad-core Lumia smartphone would be released. In the past, Nokia was rumored to be considering a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor for its highly anticipated 41-megapixel Lumia EOS PureView smartphone.
However, as recent as April, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop had confessed that his company was having difficulties with battery life management when using a quad-core processor, noting that phones running these processors are “not useful for consumers all the time.” Hopefully, Nokia’s engineers would have worked out any power management issues prior to the release of the quad-core Lumia.
