Nokia Bringing New Features To Older Lumia Devices

Published

Nokia won’t leave current Lumia users behind as it launches the Lumia 920, Lumia 820, and other Windows Phone 8 devices. The company will bring a number of features from the new devices to older phones.

Today Nokia outlined what updates current Lumia users can expect sometime in the near future. City Lens, the company’s augmented reality camera app is already available for Lumia owners, but other new features will come as well.

Other future camera features include Cinemagraph, the app and Windows Phone 8 Lens that lets users create GIFs with their camera. More updates to Smart Group Shot will also make their way to current Lumia devices as well as “some additional surprises to make photo shooting and sharing as easy as possible.”

Other new features coming to Lumia phones later this year include:

  • A new Start screen look and feel, familiar from Windows Phone 8, giving you a whole new look the moment you unlock your phone
  • Ringtone maker app to selected markets to create a personal ringtone
  • Contact share app updated to support sharing over Bluetooth in addition to SMS and email
  • Bluetooth file transfer to send media files via Bluetooth from your Lumia device to any other phone

Nokia won’t say when these updates will come to current Lumia phones, but does say the roll outs will come in phases. We assume the updates will come along with Windows Phone 7.8, whenever Microsoft releases it. Windows Phone 7.8 will bring Windows Phone 8 features like the new Start screen to current Windows Phone 7 devices because they cannot run the new Windows Phone 8.

The Finnish phone company also has new apps like Zynga games and Bloomberg News heading to Lumia phones sometime in the future. Despite Microsoft’s decision to not upgrade current phones to WIndows Phone 8 it sounds like Nokia won’t leave current customers in favor of new customers, or at least it says it won’t.
