The photography focused Nokia Lumia 1020 is sold out. That’s according to notices sent to AT&T users who had preordered the device.
The notice, which was sent to a user who then forwarded to WMPowerUser , shows that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is backordered and that the user’s current order simply can’t be completed in the time it had expected to ship the device. For reference, the Nokia Lumia 1020 isn’t actually scheduled to shipped to users until July 26th.
The Lumia 1020 is the first Windows Phone device to ship with a full assortment of Nokia’s PureView camera technology, including a 41 megapixel front-facing camera with optical image stabilization. That camera is backed by a custom camera application that allows users to control exposure times and other settings.
If the Lumia 1020 being unavailable is actually a sign of large demand instead of supply shortages that could be an unexpected win for Nokia. Most industry watchers believed that the device would only appeal to a small group of users since its camera optics made it thicker and heavier that it’s iPhone and Android-based counterparts.
It’s unusually high price also didn’t do much to dispel the idea that it would be more than a niche product that only appealed to the photo enthusiast crowd. The Lumia 1020 costs users $299.99. That price is on top of the two-year contract that users will need to sign up for to get AT&T’s device discount. Without the device subsidy from AT&T the Lumia 1020 costs $659 before taxes.
So far, there has been no word on when AT&T might be expected new shipments of the handset to arrive. According to the message sent to users who ordered the device but won’t be getting it before launch, AT&T will automatically cancel any order that sits backordered for 30 days.
If it does take at least that long to get more Lumia 1020s on AT&T store shelves, Nokia could be in for a rough time with consumers as it attempts to justify why it seems to have such a low amount of the devices on-hand, and what it’s going do to address the shortages.
In addition to the large camera sensor, the Nokia Lumia 1020 also ships with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM for a speedy user experience. It’s also the first phone to carry the Nokia Amber update and Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update on AT&T. These updates enable it to surface notifications on its 4.5” AMOLED screen when in sleep, and use the device’s built-in FM radio playback functionality.
