Verizon has already said that it would support Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 and now, it looks like the carrier might be looking to make a splash as a new rumor has it pegged to offer a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 handset later this year.
According to Bloomberg, Verizon will offer a Nokia Windows Phone 8 device sometime later this year. While Microsoft and Nokia have an event scheduled for September 5th, an event where we will likely get a peek at the first Lumia devices running Windows Phone 8, Verizon isn’t expected to make its announcement then.
Instead, the carrier will apparently announce and release a Nokia Windows Phone 8 device sometime later this year.
Verizon’s last Windows Phone launch came in May of 2011 when the carrier released the HTC Trophy, a device that has been alone on Verizon’s network. That will change in 2012 it seems.
It’s unclear which Nokia device Verizon will carry down the road though we expect it to be 4G LTE in nature given that Verizon has said that it will not release any non-4G LTE devices in 2012.
AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, along with U.S. Cellular, have all confirmed that they will be carrying Windows Phone 8 devices sometime later on this year.
Right now, the launch month is said to be November though we have heard that at least one Nokia Windows Phone 8 device could ship in October.
Microsoft is rumored to have a Windows Phone 8 launch date set for September 30th where the company may finally make its roll out plans known.
Prior to that, the company will be hosting an event in New York City with Nokia where the companies will surely show off new Windows Phone 8 hardware. In addition, Nokia World will kick off later in the month where Nokia is expected to detail more Windows Phone 8 plans.
Windows Phone 8 represents Microsoft’s most ambitious software effort since Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and it will bring tons of new features to new Windows Phone devices.
Current Windows Phone devices will not be getting the update. Instead, select devices will see a stripped down version of Windows Phone 8 dubbed Windows Phone 7.8.
