OS X Mavericks Release Date & Price Predictions
Apple announced OS X Mavericks back in June at the annual WWDC event sharing a number of new Mavericks features with the crowd and offering a beta for developers, but the company remains mum on the OS X Mavericks release date and price.
OS X Mavericks is OS X 10.9, and is first release to pick a name not shared with a large cat in several years. The OS X Mavericks upgrade includes Apple Maps and iBooks as well as a revamped Finder with tabs, new technology to deliver better battery life and much more.
While Apple won’t charge for the iOS 7 update arriving on the iPhone and iPad this fall, it will very likely charge users for the OS X Mavericks upgrade which will arrive in the Mac App Store at some point this year.

OS X Mavericks Price Predictions
When it comes to the OS X Mavericks price, Apple’s history of updates isn’t as easy to use as a baseline, but we can make some educated guesses.
While in an Apple Store last week we overheard an employee warning a customer that the OS X Mavericks upgrade price could be as much as $50 to $100, which is quite a jump from the recent upgrade costs for OS X.
Starting with OS X Snow Leopard in 2009, Apple set a precedent for charging a nominal upgrade fee of $29.99 for a single license. This is much cheaper than previous versions of OS X and significantly cheaper than Microsoft charged for upgrades to Windows 7 which started at $119.
New OS X Mavericks features point to a similar OS X Mavericks price to upgrade.
In 2011, Apple charged $29.99 to upgrade to OS X Lion, with the benefit of letting users install the upgrade on all of their personal Macs. By comparison Microsoft only sells a license for one computer in most retail stores.
When Apple announced OS X Snow Leopard in 2012 users could upgrade for $20, and install it on all of their personal Macs.
With this in mind, Apple will likely set an OS X Mavericks price of $20 to $30 on the Mac App Store. The OS X Mavericks software will be free on all Macs purchased after the release and Apple typically offers a 30 day grace period to users who buy a Mac before the new version of OS X is released.
OS X Mavericks Release Date Predictions
The OS X Mavericks release date is set for later this year, but Apple has yet to provide any specific details. Apple appears laser focused on the iPhone 5S and iOS 7 as we run into September which could mean that the OS X Mavericks release date will not arrive until late September or in October.
Expect the OS X Mavericks release date near a new MacBook Pro Retina.
The main reason we expect to see an OS X Mavericks release in September or October is that it looks like Apple is planning a major refresh to computers. We could see new MacBook Pro updates, a new iMac and the new Mac Pro in September or October according to multiple leaks.
When the OS X Mavericks release date is announced, expect fast availability in the Mac App Store. Do not expect Apple Stores to sell an OS X Mavericks USB installation.

I can’t wait for OS X Mavericks. I hope it comes out soon. iBooks on Mac, the new map thing, and iCloud keychain will be very cool and convenient to have on my Mac.

And Apple finally fixes the full screen glitch! I think it’s sad that we are not going to get this new OS X until October. I just can’t wait for any longer! This is really the first time that I’m so excited to use a new desktop OS since Leopard.
