Unlike most other tablets at this show, the Razer Edge uses the currently available Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and discrete NVIDIA GT 640M LE graphics. Razer built the Edge with input from its online community, and the community said it wanted mid-range gaming PC specs capable of playing current video games.
Both models of the Razer Edge will have one USB 3.0 port, an HD webcam, stereo speakers and microphone array.
Razer is demonstrating the Edge playing recent games like Dishonored, Rift and Civilization V with the device’s detachable controllers and touchscreen. The Razer Edge also has an optional keyboard dock for playing games in the traditional keyboard and mouse combination or for typing. Users will need a separate mouse, however, as there is not a trackpad built into the keyboard dock.
Razer will also sell an option dock for the Razer Edge that adds a number of ports and turns it into something like a home video game console. Razer showed the tablet in console mode with two controllers attached playing Dirt Showdown in split-screen mode. Most PC games don’t support split-screen, however.
The Razer Edge gaming tablet will start at $999.99 for the base model and the Edge Pro will start at $1299.99. It’s not clear if Razer will include any accessories with either tablet. The detachable controllers for the tablet will cost $249.99, the keyboard dock will cost $199.99 and the console docking station will cost $99.99
If Razer charges users separately for each accessory, the base device with all the attachments will cost about $1550 plus tax and shipping (plus a mouse if users want one). That add up to more than any other tablet on the market and about the same price as the base Alienware M17x with a larger screen and better specs.
