The iPad Air 2 has been available to purchase for a while now, with the tablet getting a refresh back in the fall. However, refurbished units are now showing up for sale in Apple’s online refurbished store for a nice discount.
Buyers can get a 16GB iPad Air 2 for just $419 or a 64GB model for $509. The former is a discount of $80 off the normal price, while the latter is a better $90 discount off of the original price. 128GB models are available as well for $589, with cellular versions selling for a little more cash, obviously.
Of course, buyers who’ve been waiting to buy refurbished have been waiting several months, as it usually takes Apple a significant amount of time to begin selling refurbished units of a product it recently released. The company has to wait for iPads to be returned, whether they were defective or just not wanted by the buyer.
At that point, Apple cleans them up and fixes them to factory condition, as well as puts on a new aluminum shell and installs a fresh battery to make the tablets like new again.
However, if there’s one thing that you should know about refurbished Apple products, it’s that the inventory is always changing, so if you see an iPad that you’re thinking about buying, but want to sleep on it for a few days, it might be gone by the time you come back with your credit card.
With that said, the models that are available now in the refurbished store might not be the same models that you’ll see later this week or next, as it’s constantly changing as people buy them up.
Of course, there’s always a wide selection to choose from. Apple’s refurbished store includes MacBook Pro units and MacBook Airs, as well as iMacs and an assortment of iPods. You won’t find refurbished iPhones, however, but you can easily find those used for a decent discount on eBay or Craigslists; just make sure that you aren’t getting scammed.
One great thing about Apple’s refurbished products is that they’re so top of the line that most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a refurbished iPad and a brand new one if they were side by side. This makes buying an Apple refurbished device one of the best moves you can make when you’re thinking about buying a “new” iPad.
The iPad Air 2 is well over six months of being on the market, and it remains largely unchanged from the previous generation as far as looks are concerned, save for the new Home button which now comes with Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which is probably one of the biggest features on the new iPad.
The iPad Air 2 is also lighter and thinner than the iPad Air, mostly thanks to Apple getting rid of the “air gap” in the display that has existed on every iPad model before this. With that air gap gone, the tablet can be thinner and also reduce light glare. The front glass and the actual display are now bonded together, just like the Microsoft Surface, allowing Apple to make the device thinner without sacrificing a lot of internal space.
Of course, the flagship tablet come with performance improvements across the board, including the new A8X processor, which is a 64-bit chip that offers 2.5x faster GPU performance and 40% faster CPU performance than the A7 processor that’s in the iPad Air. The iPad Air 2 also comes with the new M8 motion processor, just like in the iPhone 6. Also, let’s not forget about the 2GB of memory, which is a serious upgrade from the iPad Air, which only came with 1GB.
