Rivals to the iPad?

From the GBM archives

All hail the iPad.  It has arrived and conquered!  I read somewhere something like 300,000 of these were sold this weekend.  Wowsers!  If that estimate is even close, Apple is going to have a VERY good year.  I can’t wait to see what will be out by Christmas.  I even got to play with one at my local Best Buy.  I enjoyed the experience and now need to find a way to justify $499 plus tax and accessories into my budget.

Ok, enough of that.  Lets talk about the other tablet/slate devices that are due to come out this year.  What?  You mean there is something other than an iPad. Yes, yes there is.

PC World has a wonderful slideshow up on their sites called “Slate Wars”.  It shows 18 different tablet/slate devices due to come out this year.  Some of the ones listed: HP Slate, JooJoo, Lenovo Idea Pad U1, ExoPC Slate, MSI Tegra 2, as well as several others.  The GBM/Notebooks.com crew saw some of these at CES this year, and some are still in the conception stages.

We’ll be keeping an eye on these and see what will be coming out this year. Maybe Christmas won’t be all Apples this year?

The only alternative to the iPad for me would be the Notion Ink Adam!

What about you Amy, I recall you saying “Very simply….I DON’T. I don’t want an iPad. Take that Steve!” what would you get?

I’m definitely holding out to see if the HP Slate will have an active digitizer, but I realize they’re being very quiet on that front. If it does, it’s on my list of will-buys so that I can carry something small and light around as the ultimate notepad. If it doesn’t, I’ll stick with the HP 2740p model that is due this month.

Wow I didn’t think an active digitizer on an HP slate was a possibility. I’d have to buy one if that was the case. I need to replace my M1400 but don’t want to spend thousands of dollars. I’d also like to have a smaller device.

    Keeping my fingers crossed

The number of competitors is almost too large for any to become a threat to Ipad unless one or two of them can stand out. The form factor is not enough, and I have serious doubts as to Windows’ functionality, at least unless there is an active digitizer providing more precise control.

Paul, I completely agree! We have seen that demonstrated on the smart phone side, i.e. WM vs. iPhone OS. Although the iPad/Tablet class is -slightly- different from the smart phone class, similar principles such as UI (very big factor) and App. support are decisive when it comes to commercial success. I think, however, that many slate manufacturers will learn from the iPad UI, again, like other smart phones learned from the iPhone.
