Samsung had debuted a new 10mm fisheye lens for the company’s lineup of mirrorless smart cameras with interchangeable lenses. For use with the NX camera, the 10mm lens offers a field of view of 180 degress and is very small, compact, and lightweight. The lens itself is constructed out of plastic, but the mount–where the lens attaches to the camera–is metal. The lens itself has an aperture of F3.5.
For the ultimate photographic experience, the lens comes with a number of iScene options, including Beauty Shot, Portrait, Night, Backlight, Children and Sports, making it adaptable for the needs of every photographer. The 10mm F3.5 Fisheye is also fitted with a Circular Aperture Diaphragm to bring the subject of your images front and centre.
And though Samsung classifies its NX300 camera, which we used with the 10mm lens to capture some sample images, the camera itself doesn’t run a mobile operating system like the Android OS on Samsung’s Galaxy Camera. Instead, the smart functionality is taken from the included WiFi and NFC features of the camera for easy sharing of photos and uploading to Facebook.
When I had seen the lens at a Samsung event in San Francisco, California, Samsung representatives had informed me that the lens I saw was a prototype unit, but the project manager says that the optics had been finalized.
The firmware for the lens, however, was not a final release firmware, but as the lens hardware was already finalized, Samsung allowed me to take and publish sample images of San Francisco’s Bay Embarcadero with the lens.
We’ll have to wait to see photos from a production-ready model of the fisheye lens to make our final judgement. Without the final firmware, autofocus didn’t quite work right with the camera and the lens, and that issue should be corrected via software before the lens goes on sale.
Samsung so far hasn’t disclosed pricing nor availability, noting that the lens is coming later this year.
Samsung is also rumored to be introducing a Galaxy Camera 2 as a mirrorless system. It’s unclear if the upgraded model will have interchangeable lenses, but if it does then this fisheye lens could be a great option for those who want a very wide field of view.
