It looks like Samsung is once again turning back to Corning for Gorilla Glass on its flagship smartphone following customer complaints and confusion as to why the scratch-resistant and durable glass was not present on the Google-branded Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone. The company announced that Gorilla Glass 2 will indeed by present on the Galaxy S III Android flagship smartphone.
According to SammyHub, Samsung had released a statement saying:
We are pleased to offer our customers the thin elegance and refined style of the GALAXY S III using Corning Gorilla Glass 2. New Corning Gorilla Glass 2 is an ideal solution for Samsung’s high-quality smartphones, enabling a superior touch experience and a lightweight and slim design, with the damage and scratch resistance consumers have come to expect.
Gorilla Glass 2 was announced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. While the material offers the same strength and protection as the original, Corning says that the glass is now 20 percent thinner, which should offer better screen clarity, improved touch responses, and also allow for either thinner devices or ones that pack in heftier batteries–the latter will be important with a 720p HD display.
With the company’s third-generation flagship Android smartphone, it seems that Samsung is at least paying more attention to the design and material choices it makes on its devices. More recently, the company had announced that it is using polycarbonate, rather than simple plastic, on the casing and battery door of the Galaxy S III. Polycarbonate, which is a type of plastic, offers better resilience to scratches and damage compared to regular plastic. In the past, cheap-feeling plastic parts were a common complaint of Samsung’s phones.
