Samsung Galaxy S4 Beats HTC One with Double The Sales

In the battle of the Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. HTC One, it looks like Samsung is coming out ahead with sales double that of the HTC One.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One arrived in April and May on multiple carriers to great fanfare and competition. HTC showed up at Samsung’s launch event to try to poach shoppers and the two companies are duking it out at retail.

An un-named HTC executive told The Wall Street Journal that the company sold around 5 million HTC One devices since the phone launched in late April. This is refreshing news amid reports that executives are fleeing the company and the HTC First is killing morale.

HTC One sales are at 5 million while the Galaxy S4 sales hit 10 million earlier this month.

Samsung announced on the Samsung Tomorrow blog that Samsung Galaxy S4 sales topped 10 million within a month of the phone’s launch.

For comparison, the iPhone 5 sold over 5 million units to consumers in the first weekend of sales.

Both HTC and Samsung are claiming these are units sold, though it’s not entirely clear if these units are sold to consumers or just sold to channel partners like carriers and retailers. Apple only talks about devices sold directly to consumers.

While brisk sales of the HTC One are good news for HTC, which is counting heavily on the success of the HTC One to bring the company back into the spotlight, the major difference in first month sales highlights just how much of an uphill battle the HTC One faces.

It’s not clear how the HTC One sales split between the major carriers offering the device, but it doesn’t help that the HTC One is not available on Verizon Wireless. While the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 didn’t go on sale until today, consumers had a clear data in mind.

With the Verizon HTC One rumors, a good number of shoppers may be waiting to see if Verizon announces a the HTC One before switching carriers. A Verizon CTIA 2013 event yesterday was tipped as a possible HTC One launch on the carrier, but nothing came of it, much to the disappointment of consumers who took to twitter to express their frustration.

HTC is leaving sales on the table by not offering the Verizon HTC One, something the company needs to address, even if it is in a  strong denial of the Verizon HTC One, which could push some consumers to jump ship to a carrier offering the device.

But the HTC owners will be looking for a place to charge the battery eating pig. And who cares…everyone uses cases today, so plastic is a non-issue.

‘Everyone uses cases’? Rubbish! I’ve never used a case and about 60% of my colleagues don’t either. I would be the first to complain if the HTC One’s battery doesn’t last as I’ve been publically critical (many times) of HTC’s lack of removable battery but it has to be said, I’ve not been caught short yet.
