Samsung Galaxy S5 & iPhone 6 Rumors Collide

Published

on

Samsung Galaxy S5 and iPhone 6 rumors have collided today with a new report claiming that both Samsung and Apple will skip curved flexible displays on their upcoming flagships. Instead, it appears that Samsung won’t release a smartphone with its flexible Samsung Youm technology until late 2014.

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen both LG and Samsung release smartphones with curved, flexible displays. From LG, the LG G Flex, a device with a curved 720p display. From Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy Round, a device with a 1080p display. Both devices were announced in the Korean market and it’s clear that neither phone will be launching on a massive, global scale.

It also looks like the display technology that is on board these devices may not be making it to two of the biggest smartphones of the year.

According to The Korean Herald, citing comments from analysts, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will miss out on Samsung’s flexible Samsung Youm technology that is found on the Galaxy Round. Kim Jong-hyun, an analyst at Seoul-based Eugene Investment & Securities, claims that will not be able to get enough flexible displays made in time for the Galaxy S5’s early launch in 2014. Instead, he claims that Samsung will launch a device with this technology later in 2014, meaning, there is a chance that the Galaxy Note 4 could have Samsung Youm on board.

John Seo, an analyst at Shinhan Investment, claims that the iPhone 6 from Apple will not adopt a curved display either. The feature is said to be dead in the water given that the display divisions from LG and Samsung won’t even be able to meet their own supply numbers.

Given that these rumors come from analysts, the door for flexible displays on both of these phones is still open. However, we haven’t heard any credible rumors pointing to the inclusion of this type of technology on board the Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 so the door is only cracked and may be shut soon.

Those interested in the Galaxy S5 will more than likely find out first. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy S5 will be launching early in the year, perhaps as early as February. Galaxy S5 release date rumors suggest that the device could arrive in late April, just like the Samsung Galaxy S4 last year.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is expected to feature an upgraded processor, new 16MP camera, a 5-inch display, Android 4.4 KitKat, and perhaps, a brand new design. Rumors point to either metal, plastic, or both. Rumors also suggest that there could be two versions of the Galaxy S5 including a premium model and a cheaper model.

Apple’s iPhone 6 isn’t expected until later in the year. Rumors have pointed to either a launch in the summer or the fall, per usual, though a new report from hit-or-miss publication Digitimes suggests that an iPhone 6 could come as early as May. Digitimes has been dead on with Apple rumors in the past but its track record is certainly mixed.

iPhone 6 rumors have been scarce compared to Galaxy S5 rumors though they have aligned suggesting that the 2014 iPhone will have a larger display, possibly in the vicinity of 4.8-inches. There is also talk of a larger 5-inch iPhone model that could potentially serve as an opponent to Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.
