The Samsung Galaxy S5 features list shrunk with recent rumors, but a new series of alleged Galaxy S5 screenshots show a new killer feature for one-handed use and a new music player that ties into social media services.
Samsung may increase the Galaxy S5 display size to the 5.25-inch size with a higher QHD resolution. A larger screen is nice for reading and watching movies, but there is a chance it will make using the Galaxy S5 with one hand more challenging.
For comparison, the Galaxy Note arrived with a 5.3-inch screen which Samsung has since increased to a 5.75-inch screen on the Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy S5 design remains a mystery, so it is possible that shrinking bezels will help keep the phone size similar to the Galaxy S4 even with a bigger screen. But, if the Galaxy S5 is larger Samsung will likely want to provide some tweaks to make it easier to use with one hand.
A new leak from Kipris, discovered by GalaxyClub.nl shows a new interface with touchpoints in the corners that the allow users to activate shortcuts to apps and settings. The idea is one that we’ve seen used on the Casio G’zOne Commando before to launch a shortcut to apps, but it could make a good deal of sense on the Galaxy S5.
The mock ups above show a method that Samsung could use to let owners use the Galaxy S5 with one hand easier. The source claims it is not a done deal that this solution will appear on the Galaxy S5.
If it does not we could still see some type of one-handed software features on the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy Note 3 can shift the keyboard and dialer to one side as well as the PIN entry on the lock screen. For users who need to shrink everything, a less elegant solution is to shrink the entire Note 3 screen down to a smaller size and position it on the larger screen like a Window so that you can use the device easier with one hand. The video below shows this in action on the Note 3.
On top of the rumored Galaxy S5 one-handed software, the source also leaks a new music app that could arrive on the Galaxy S5. Music services like Pandora, Spotify and others are pushing into the territory that built-in music players once served with affordable access to a deep catalog of music, but it appears Samsung believes a social connection is the answer.
In the screenshot above a “Friends Music” app shows what the music app on the Galaxy S5 could look like. This is similar in style to the leaked Galaxy S5 TouchWiz screens, with the rightmost screen showing cards for music that friends are playing.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch event is rumored for February 23rd, though that source now says it could happen on a different date, possibly in London during March. The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date is rumored for April or May, but there are still many mysteries surrounding the device.
