Now that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is official and coming soon, we’re now looking forward to what is next for the manufacturer. From the Galaxy Note 4, to the rumored Galaxy S5 Zoom.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors about a Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom smart cameraphone, but a new benchmark result from GFXBench is revealing new details and a possibility that the device indeed exists. Following a somewhat successful Galaxy S4 Zoom last year, we could see the same thing arrive in 2014 a few months after the new Galaxy S5 makes its debut in April.
The Galaxy S4 was met with overall positive reviews, but is somewhat a niche product, and the Galaxy S5 Zoom will be the same way. Last year Samsung packed similar specs into the same 4.8-inch screen on the Galaxy S4, only added a huge 16 megapixel camera lens to the back. This year we’re expecting the same from the Galaxy S5.
Being able to squeeze point-n-shoot specs and features into a smartphone and keep it affordable meant we didn’t have an AMOLED display, and the processor was changed from the popular Snapdragon 600 quad-core in the original Galaxy S4. If the company follows that same plan from last year, we could have another mid-range Galaxy S5 Zoom sometime this summer.

According to the leaked benchmark the Galaxy S5 Zoom won’t actually have a 5-inch screen, but will be a worthy upgrade to make the name change. Offering a 4.8-inch 720p display and Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the biggest change is to the camera. The Galaxy S5 Zoom could house a 19 megapixel lens and will likely feature the same 10X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, an autofocus assist lamp, and Xenon flash as the model from last year.
Other specs include a 2 megapixel front camera and an odd 6-core (Hexa-core) processor running at 1.5 GHz with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, micro-SD slot (up to 128GB) for expansion, and the usual radios, bluetooth and NFC capabilities.
The screen and internal specs certainly don’t match the flagship Galaxy S5, but this new zoom smartphone could be a viable alternative to the camera-happy smartphone user or light photographer.
