After just 21 hours of deliberation, the jury in the Apple versus Samsung case found that Samsung willfully infringed on Apple’s patents and awarded the latter with over $1 billion in damages.
The case started all the way back in April when Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung claiming that the company infringed on many of its patents. And now, according to The Verge, a jury has found that Samsung has indeed infringed on many of those patents while also acknowledging that Apple’s patents are indeed valid.
The verdict will likely be appealed by Samsung.
The court has found Samsung guilty of patent infringement on several Apple patents, a ruling that encompasses most of the Samsung devices in question. Only a few Samsung-made devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab, have been deemed to not infringe on Apple’s patents.
Specifically, the jury found Samsung guilty of infringing on several of Apple’s design patents including its pinch-to-zoom patent, its home screen GUI and the design of the back of the iPhone.
Even worse, the court found that Samsung knowingly infringed on five of the seven patents in question. That means that Samsung executives either knew or should have known that they were blatantly infringing on Apple’s patents.
In all, the jury has awarded Apple over $1billion in damages. In all, Samsung now owes Apple a grand total of $1,051,855,000.00. Apple originally wanted $2.5 billion in damages, so it looks like the company got less than half of what it wanted.
The court also found that Apple did not infringe on any of Samsung’s patents with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. This means that Samsung will not collect any money in damages.
While not official yet, we expect Samsung to appeal the verdict which means the case could live on to fight another day.
