Segway Created Its Own Hoverboard That Follows You Around

Published

on

Two-wheeled self-balancing scooters (mostly known as “hoverboards”) have become all the rage over the last few months, and Segway has gotten in on the fun with its new Segway Robot.

The Robot looks and acts similar to those nifty hoverboards, but has an interesting element added onto it. A short section about a foot tall rises above the device and is mounted between your feet as you ride. When you’re not riding it, the screen turns on the show a face and even arms pop out.

The robot portion of the rideable device was developed by Intel and Xiaomi, and it’s capable of sensing its own surroundings and can recognize objects, people, and voices.

When you’re not riding it around, it can act as a robot butler of sorts, carrying things in its hands or even taking photos and videos, acting as a NannyCam of sorts if you have kids. It can also talk back to you when you provide it with voice commands.

The Segway Robot has a range of about 18.5mph and can reach speeds of just over 11 miles per hour.

One example that Segway showed off with its Robot is the ability to answer the door and let the guest in, guiding the guest to where they can sit down.

Very few details were provided as far as pricing and availability are concerned, but the company says that a developer kit will be arriving at some point during the second half of this year, which will allow third-party developers to give the Segway Robot even more functionality.

It’s interesting to see Segway branching out from merely transportation to having a robot using its two-wheeled form of traveling. Even though it’s still early, I’m excited to see what developers come up with for this little guy. Thanks for sharing.
