Shenmue 3 is real and it is coming to console and PC if it raises $2 Million in the next thirty days. There are options to play Shenmue 3 early if you back the #SaveShenmue project on kickstarter.
On stage at the Sony E3 2015 press conference Yu Suzuki announced the Shenmue 3 release and the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter project where gamers can support the project to make the final Shenmue a reality.
After the announcement Kickstarter went offline for just under 10 minutes due to the obscene amount og interest in Shenmue 3.
With reward levels starting at $5 gamers can show their support for the new Shenmue well before the game arrives.
Even though this is a big name in gaming, gamers can essentially pre-order Shenmue 3 right now to make it a reality for just $29 in digital form.
Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that lets creators leverage the demand from buyers to fund a project before it is created. Even if a project is fully funded complications can prevent the release, but the team working on Shenmue 3 shares their experience and addresses the potential challenges behind creating Shenmue on the Kickstarter page.
Here’s what you need to know about the Shenmue 3 release date and what backing Shenmue 3 really means, plus other important details.
Shenmue 3 Release Date
The Shenmue 3 release date is December 2017 according to the Kickstarter page. This may change depending on how the development process goes.
We typically see a December release date listed for games coming out in a specific year. This leaves it open to the potential for a Shenmue 3 release date sometime in 2017.
What is Shenmue 3
Shenmue 3 is not a remake nor is it something that another company is picking up and bringing back to life. On the Kickstarter page the team is adamant that,
“Shenmue 3 is the true sequel to the classic open world action RPG games, Shenmue and Shenmue 2. Created for modern platforms (PC and PlayStation 4) and built-in Unreal 4, Shenmue 3 will continue the legacy of Shenmue.”
We’ll see new fighting mechanics, but there are classic elements of the game. The new game starts in China where Ryo is searching for his father’s killer. The game takes players through many mysteries and hopefully the end of this tale.
Back Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter
Right now you can back Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter as part of the #SaveShenmue campaign. Yu Suzuki chose Kickstarter so that he could bring the game directly to fans and produce the game that fans want. On the page Suzuki states, “It will not be easy, but I have dreamed of making this sequel for 14 years – it is time to bring Shenmue back!”
This is similar to a pre-order, but you aren’t guaranteed the game because you are backing it for a reward, not placing a traditional pre-order.
The various reward levels start at $5 for a thank you and simple support and range up to $10,000 for a dinner with Yu Suzuki.
Most gamers will go for the $29 Digital copy of Shenmue 3 on PS4 or PC or upgrade tot he $60 physical copy on PC.
Shenmue 3 Beta Access
Another exciting option is the Shenmue 3 Trial version for $100 that includes early access to the game on PC.
The Kickstarter page does not list a specific date for the Shenmue 3 beta, which it calls a trial, but it is only available on PC.
For a $100 or higher backing level on Kickstarter you get, “Your choice of a digital copy of the game for PC or PS4, or a physical copy for PC + A digital copy of the trial version for PC.”
No Shenmue 3 for Xbox One
The Shenmue 3 release is only coming to PS4 and PC. There is no plan for a Shenmue 3 Xbox One release according to the Kickstarter page. Based on that and the fact that this appeared on stage at the Sony E3 2015 press conference there is little chance you’ll be playing Shenmue 3 on Xbox One.
