Siri Rumored to Be Getting Native Sports Scores

Siri, the personal assistant found on the iPhone 4S, may be getting an ability in the future, a feature that sports fanatics everywhere have likely been hoping and praying for since the software’s release back in October. According to developer Evan Coleman, it would appear that Siri will be getting native sports scores at some point in the future, possibly through a partnership with ESPN.

As many of you know, one of my favorite apps for iOS is ESPNScoreCenter. I use it every single day on my iPhone and my iPad to check out scores, news and highlights from across the sports world.

But as much as I love the app, it would be pretty awesome to be able to ask Siri how my Niners are doing without having to scroll through an app to find the score.

Rumored Feature for Siri Would Be a Sports Fanatics Dream

Coleman bases his findings off of what he has found baked into Siri.

When you ask Siri a question, your voice is sent to Apple’s server and broken down into tokens. The servers interpret the tokens and then send them back to the device in order to provide a proper response.

Most of these tokens are just one word according to Coleman. For example, even though New York City is three words, Siri is able to identify it as one thing.

Interestingly, Coleman has found that Siri does the same thing with sports teams which had led him to believe that native support is coming.

Coleman believes that ESPN might be the one delivering the scores and cites ESPN’s releasing of a new developer API for sports score, an API that’s only available to premium ESPN partners like Apple. An ESPN rep also confirmed that the company was working closely with Apple.

That could just be a coincidence or it could be interpreted as Apple and ESPN possibly collaborating on something for Siri.

Even if it’s not done by ESPN, this would be an amazing feature for sports nuts who are constantly trying to open up applications to check the scores of their favorite teams.

Might we see this in iOS 6?

I know I have my fingers crossed.
