The SlingPlayer for Tablets App for Android Honeycomb Tablets got previewed a bit ago and now it is available for the now familiar $29.99 price tag that Sling Media charges for each of its Apps. I’ve had a love hate relationship with Sling Media, its Slingbox and Apps for quite some time.
First, the love part. Being able to cue up your home TV on a Tablet or other device while you’re away is not only a fantastic idea but a great convenience. I love being able to watch something in the background on nights I work late in the office or at times that I have to concede the remote to the wife.
I’m not a fan of Sling Media’s relatively high price tag of $29.99 for each of its platform Apps, but I do pay that freight for the convenience and I understand the business model. The existing Android App that worked on phones will still work on Android Tablets if you’ve already gone down that road in what they call “compatibility mode.” The new App promises a reworked program guide and remote control that supposedly allows an easier method of browsing content while viewing a program. Here’s hoping that makes it way to the iOS version.
My woes with Sling Media products I would describe as frustrations with a technology that I really enjoy and see myself getting great benefit from. Because I do derive benefit, I end up getting past those frustrations and continue to invest in the product. I’m guessing I’m not alone. And to be honest, this is one of the Apps that I think make Tablets so worthwhile.
