Sprint 4G LTE Arrives Early in SF Bay Area

It looks like Sprint has fired up its 4G LTE network early in several cities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to Android Police, and several users on the S4GRU forums, Sprint 4G LTE data speeds have gone live in several Bay Area cities including Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Cupertino – the home of Apple, and Mountain View – the home of Google.

And while it appears to be available, at least in the South Bay, for the moment, it doesn’t look like the network is live in San Francisco itself.

Sprint has yet to announce any specific release date for the Bay Area so it would appear as though the carrier might be testing 4G LTE ahead of a launch. When that official launch might arrive remains unclear.

4G LTE has arrived early for some in the SF Bay Area.

So, it would appear as though Sprint might be starting its 4G LTE efforts in the South Bay instead of in San Francisco proper, the North Bay or the East Bay.

A Sprint user saw 4G LTE active in San Jose as early as mid-July, only to see that service pulled a few days later. The same could happen here.

The carrier’s next 4G LTE roll out date isn’t scheduled until September where it will arrive in four new cities in addition to the fifteen cities where it’s already live.

By September 3rd, customers in Baltimore, Maryland, Gainesville, Georgia, Manhattan/Junction City, Kansas and Sherman-Denison, Texas will see 4G LTE data service.

We also expect Sprint to add more cities to that list before September arrives, the month that Apple is rumored to be releasing the iPhone 5 which is rumored to have 4G LTE capabilities.

Anyone out there in the South Bay seeing 4G LTE service from Sprint?

I’ve driven past the HWY 85, I-280 interchange twice in the last month and both times experienced 4G LTE on my Galaxy Nexus. On 9/16 at 7:45pm my speeds were 4.8 down and 2.0 up. Went by the same spot yesterday and its still up. Kind of jealous since I live mid-peninsula. :o)
