Sprint HTC EVO 4G Now Available

The HTC EVO 4G is available at Sprint retail sotres, Walmart, Best Buy, RadioShack and starting to day. The EVO is the first 4G phone available in the U.S. and is getting a lot of people excited.  The EVO 4G is selling for $199.99 after rebate with a two-year contract.

The HTC EVO has dual cameras and runs on Sprint’s 4G network, making it possible to video chat with friends. It comes pre-loaded with Qik Video Chat, which does look pretty cool assuming you have friends with similarly equipped devices.

Early reviews have dinged the EVO 4G for lackluster battery life, but that seems to be the norm these days with media-centric smartphones.

update: Josh Smith put together an EVO 4G review roundup and more details about it over at

Regarding battery life, I haven’t had a smartphone yet that can compare with a dumbphone, but it’s ALL about how you use it. I turn off “push” syncing and sync on a schedule, and I turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi except when I really need them. 4G would never be on since it’s not available in my region yet.

Moreover, just because you CAN do all of those things, people forget the whole idea that it’s NOT additive… meaning, you do NOT get 4 hours of talk PLUS 4 hours of hotspot PLUS 10 hours of data, etc.

Smartphone makers need to keep improving battery life. People are using more data and running more apps in the background. Even extended game playing saps batteries.
