Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 Buyers Should Act Now

According to Microsoft, users looking to pick up a Surface Pro 2 or Surface 2 should pre-order the devices online or at one of its Microsoft Stores as soon as possible.

The revelation came in a blog post earlier this week in which Microsoft wasn’t shy about pushing users to pre-order the device they want, while supplies last. In fact, the company says that users who are reading their blog are likely Surface fans and that they “want you [Surface fans] to know [that Microsoft has] limited availability.”

The post also confirms that a few versions of the devices and accessories Microsoft unveiled at last month’s event are already sold at its own retail locations and on MicrosoftStore.com. Sold out items include the Arch Touch Mouse Surface Edition and the Purple Type Cover 2 accessories that debuted along with the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

Microsoft says users looking to pick up the Surface 2 with 64GB of on-board storage and the Surface Pro 2 in its 256GB and 512GB storage capacities should order as soon as possible. It seems that these configurations of both devices are “close to selling out” ahead of the October 22nd launch.

Microsoft’s post on Surface availability seems pretty odd, especially since the Surface RT was initially hard to come by before costing the company $900 million in unsold units earlier this year. However, it’s entirely possible that the company learned its lesson from overestimating demand last year, and that is trying to tighten up its supply chains with its latest tablets.

Based on internal specifications alone, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are worthy updates to Microsoft’s tablets. The Surface 2, the next-generation version of the Surface RT device Microsoft released last year, includes a full high-definition display, USB 3.0, a two position kickstand and a more powerful processor. Users can still only download apps from the Windows Store, however.

The Surface Pro 2 includes a two-position kick stand and a new Intel Haswell processor. The company says that the processor enables users to get 75% more battery power than they could with the Surface Pro. The Surface 2 pricing begins at $449 while the Surface Pro 2 starts at $899.
