Surprise Holiday 2015 Xbox One Deal Brings Savings

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retail store, is hoping that Holiday 2015 shoppers are looking for deals on Microsoft’s Xbox One gaming console even before Halloween arrives. Right now, anyone can purchase the Xbox One Gears of war Ultimate Edition bundle and receive another free game of their choice.

When Wal-Mart starting offering this Xbox One deal isn’t exactly clear. It’s also not clear when the Xbox One deal in question disappears. The Xbox One is Microsoft’s current-generation gaming console. It launched in 2013 for $499. At launch it included no free games, but did have a Kinect sensor complete with a web cam and support for voice commands and television channel switching.

This Xbox One deal costs just $349.99 at Wal-Mart’s website. Before shoppers add the bundle to their cart the get to pick out one game to get at no additional cost. Games available to shoppers include Batman Arkham Knight, Battlefield Hardline, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, The Witcher 3, The Elder Scrolls Online, Forza Horizon 2, ,Madden NFL 16, FIFA 16, Destiny: the Taken King, ,NBA 2K16, Forza 6 and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Each of those games are fairly new, costing upwards of $50 if shoppers purchase them separately from the bundle.

The Xbox One included in the bundle already comes with a free game itself, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, which is a remake of the first Gears of War from the Xbox 360. That game costs $39.99 brand new from Amazon. Microsoft still plans to throw in digital copies of other Gears of War games for users who purchase Gears of War Ultimate edition by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear when Wal-Mart plans to stop offering this Xbox One deal. The site does make it clear that the bundled savings is only for the $349 Gears of War Ultimate Edition Xbox One Bundle. As such, the deal doesn’t apply to other bundles like the Halo 5 Limited Edition Xbox One Bundle.

Wal-Mart does have even more Xbox One deals for those looking to explore their options. $349.99 gets shoppers a Gears of War Ultimate Edition Xbox One with 3 months of Xbox Live Gold instead of the free extra game. Separately, three months of Xbox Live Gold costs $24.99. Xbox One owners need Xbox Live before they can play multiplayer games, like Halo 5: Guardians alone. The service also lets users download a selection of free games to their console every month. In that way, it’s kind of a video game rental service.

For $349, Wal-Mart shoppers can also pick up the same Gears of War bundle with an extra Xbox One Wireless Controller instead of an extra game. Xbox One Wireless Controllers normally sells for $59.99 – the same cost as a new game.

All told, this is some pretty robust savings when you consider how much the console started out at launch. Buyers don’t get the Kinect sensor with any of these deals, but that’s not important depending on specific use cases. With the Kinect, Xbox One can act as a Skype video chat client, controller televisions sets, change the channel on cable boxes and take voice commands.

The sensor also has a few motion games, but it seems no new ones are in development beyond the Just Dance series of games from Ubisoft. Users can purchase a Kinect sensor separately for $150 brand new. The sensor comes with a copy of Dance Central Spotlight; it was release on Xbox One last year.

With the Holiday 2015 shopping season quickly approaching, expect more deals like this on Xbox One consoles. Dell’s leaked Black Friday 2015 deals include an Xbox One priced at just $299. GameStop has lowered the price of used Xbox Ones to just $299 also.
