T-Mobile Brings Enhanced iPhone Coverage to 14 New Cities

T-Mobile today bestowed an early holiday gift upon owners of the iPhone as the carrier announced that it has lit up 14 new cities in the United States, including Boston and New York, with its enhanced 3G network.

The carrier’s Chief Technology Officer, Neville Rey, made the announcement today outlining the 14 new cities that will fall under T-Mobile’s 1900MHz spectrum. That spectrum will allow for owners of an unlocked AT&T iPhone to bring the device over to T-Mobile’s network, using the correct SIM card of course, and take advantage of the carrier’s significantly faster network.

T-Mobile’s enhanced iPhone-friendly network is now live in 14 more cities.

Before T-Mobile started re-farming its network, iPhone owners could only use the carrier’s 2G EDGE network. Now, users will be able to pick up quick data speeds on T-Mobile’s 3G network which is one of the fastest in the United States. Current T-Mobile customers who aren’t using an iPhone will not experience any sort of a change.

The list of cities may be 14, but the neighborhoods where the service is now live is extensive. Here is the full list of areas that should now see T-Mobile’s speedier network live, ready to be used.

  • New York, including The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island
  • Newark, N.J., including the surrounding cities of East Orange, Elizabeth, Jersey City, North Bergen, Paterson and Union City
  • Boston and Cambridge, Mass., including the surrounding cities of Amherst, Andover, Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Billerica, Braintree, Brockton, Brookline, Burlington, Canton, Chelmsford, Chelsea, Chicopee, Dedham, Everett, Framingham, Hadley, Holbrook, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lexington, Lowell, Ludlow, Lynn, Malden, Marblehead, Medford, Melrose, Metheun, Milton, Nahant, Natick, Needham, Newton, Quincy, Reading, Revere, Salem, Saugus, Sommerville, Stoneham, Swampscott, Tewksbury, Wakefield, Walpole, Waltham, Watertown, Weston, Westwood, Weymouth, Wilmington, Winchester, Winthrop and Woburn
  • Springfield, Mass.
  • Providence, R.I., including the surrounding cities of Cranston, North Providence, Pawtucket and Warren
  • Philadelphia
  • Detroit and Warren, Mich., including the surrounding cities of Dearborn, Romulus, Royal Oak, Sterling Heights and Troy
  • Dallas, including the surrounding cities of Arlington, Carrolton, The Colony, Denton, Farmers Branch, Flower Mound, Frisco, Garland, Grand Prairie, Irving, Lancaster, Lewisville, McKinney, Mesquite, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett and Southlake
  • Fort Worth, Texas, including the surrounding cities of Keller and Mansfield
  • Austin, Texas including the surrounding city of Round Rock
  • San Antonio
  • Tampa, Fla., including the surrounding cities of Clearwater, Largo, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg and Vinoy Park

All in all, it’s a massive expansion and one that should delight owners of the iPhone who are using their device on T-Mobile’s network instead of on AT&T’s.

This is all part of T-Mobile’s network expansion plans which also include a roll out of 4G LTE at some point in 2013. T-Mobile will launch its 4G LTE network in 2013, around the same time that its merger with MetroPCS will close. The carrier also will start selling the iPhone at some point next year, the first time it has done so, but as of yet, T-Mobile has no disclosed which model or when it might become available.

T-Mobile’s re-farming of its network will help provide a nice bit of a relief for owners as it gets its 4G LTE network up and live across the country.

Right now though, the best option for T-Mobile users to get an iPhone is to buy an unlocked model from Apple. Apple currently sells the AT&T model of the iPhone 5 starting at $649 for the 16GB model, a steep price, but fortunately T-Mobile offers one of the best off-contract plans of any carrier in the U.S.
